Finding / Building ssy-1 laser

Hey lpf, i am new here and have some questions about ssy-1 ND:yag lasers. For one what does ssy-1 stand for? also why are they hardly find able, are they old or just not manufactured anymore? or both? Also if you found a place to buy it then please do link below! Finally if i cant find one i will have to build my own. i looked at a quick image of whats inside it and its basically just a flash lamp, yag rod, reflective cap, lenses... BUT THERE ALL EXPENSIVE:(. please help me out here thank you much.

Also, you would probably get much more help with your questions from some members if you made a post in the "welcome" section.

You can also use the "custom search" bar located at the bottom of the page, it contains a lot of laser related info. I just typed in (ssy-1 laser) and got quite a few hits.

I was going to say, didn't we just have a thread about this not too long ago. The SSY-1 distinction was a particular manufacturer's model #, but somehow got used to describe all the Nd doped YAG lasers that once were used for range finding. Sam's Laser FAQs is your best resource for learning how they work, but finding one in working condition will cost you plenty. Just the nature of the beast.
