it would kill me not to run those argons :p
can i find an LED thats 632nm?
since theres one on the forum thats only 65$ i figured i might want it :)
how much are 542nm (543?) lasers?

You can get a new bare tube green (543.5nm) HeNe (the left tube in my avatar) for $100. I already had a PSU from my green HeNe head so all I needed was a male Alden type connector. A PSU will set you back between 50-100 bucks depending on the model. You need one that can output 2800VDC at 6-7ma with 6.5ma being ideal. The PS I have takes 12VDC in at ~2.1A and outputs 2500-3200VDC at 6.5ma.

Hmm. I really need to fire up that tube again soon.

edit: There are two things that keep me from running my argon frequently. It draws 4A (480W!) at idle power and 10A (1200W!) at full power. Secondly even at idle this thing can put my radiator style space heater to shame. :p

Pretty much anything thats rare and expensive such as: 473nm, 543nm, 589nm, ect. Even high power IR lasers like 980nm. Its not really my fav, but I really like the 445 and 405nm since I like blue/ violet colors the best.

I own(d) a piece of hardware that's even more of a heater.

Using both modules (all 16 cpu's) and doing something strenuous like multi-threaded blender rendering jobs, It'd pull 30A@220V.. And yes.. It heated the house.. quickly.

It's sadly not in one piece anymore even though I still have all of it. Just not worth it anymore since the same processing power can be had for 1/20th the power consumption. So It got gutted recently and the nice four post 19" rack re-purposed for my other servers that live here. I put the skins back on it so it still looks the same from the front and sides anyway heh. The MMSC display isn't attached to anything anymore though.

You gutted an SGI? Shame on you! I still have my 8 cpu origin 2100 (besides my 3 origin 200s, 3 octanes, 3 O2's, indigo2 and indy).

LtKernelPanic: The smallest argon laser I have is a lexel 85. I don't have it running yet, it needs over 20 amps at 230v, more than the wall outlet can supply. My spectra physics stabilite 2016 and 2017 are even worse. All need water cooling. So only if your argon needs both water cooling and a special outlet you'd have an excuse of not ronning it ;)

I was a big SGI collector for a while, but I ran out of both storage space and money heh. At one time I had one or two of every MIPS based workstation SGI produced, excepting the tezro. Those were never available in my budget range. Right now i'm just down to a R10k indigo2 with max/solid impact dual head graphics, and a VW320.. Both of which I believe aryntha is getting whenever he makes it down here to pick them up... Or I go up there. And of course.. the 2400.

My 2400 was special though. It thought it was an onyx2 :D I had an IO6g in it and did the octane video mod to it so it was usable locally.

I thought about trying to sell the whole thing, but the rack and skins were just too pretty to part with. I'll probably list the guts for sale on nekochan whenever I get a chance to power up the 'bricks' again and get a hinv.. Somebody out there will likely be interested in the dual r12k 400 boards and IO6g if nothing else. Possibly the MMSC since those are prone to die as well.

A few years back I was also active on Nekochan (mostly learning a lot), but in my case time got limited as my new study (applied physics) and the associated lasers hobby required almost all available time. I wish I had more time, sgi's are awesome, and Nekochan is really a very nice place, pretty unique.

I got my origin 2100 free by the way, together with a 1.1 meter long spectraphysics stabilite 2017 argon lasers. Universities can be awesome :)

Anyway, it's awesome to meet people having not only the same laser hobby but even liking SGI. My new favorite wavelengths: fuel red, octane green, O2 blue and tezro violet (or crimson red, indigo2 green, indigo blue and onyx violet if you're old school) :D

I like the 405nm wavelength of course i've always been big on flourescence of objects and GITD stuff ;)

And of course being colorblind doesn't help to much with colors lol
