Is the END of portable lasers nigh?

I just read that CNI will soon be ceasing production of all portable , pointer , handheld , anything that runs of battery power starting 2015.

Dragon Laser's 589nm DPSS spartans are also now in "limited supply".

Laserglow is also closing production of portable lasers I've heard.

With all these manufacturers closing up their portable laser production line and only sticking with labbies. Where will the laser hobbyists go for their portable DPSS laser needs? Is the future only limited to direct pumps?

-A slightly worried laser amateur who just sold his 500mW 532nm DPSS.

Links, sources?

If that's true, that's worrying news. It's fairly believable as well, since one might imagine that pricy handheld lasers with VERY limited practical applications do not really make up majority of the income for those companies.

Well, as long as there are laser-powered projectors available, and DTR here to harvest them, I don't think we'll have shortage of blue lasers anytime soon, but everything else...

Ultimatekaiser say so .
He said he has been dealing personally with CNI and many local and foreign customs officials.

The GB may as well as be the FINAL batch of portable lasers CNI will EVER produce ever again.

yeah... for anything 532 , 589 , 473 , 562 , whatever... anything that isn't coming out of a tiny diode and then collimated by a lens is GONE.
We will have to rely on direct pump greens like 520. Colors will soon become very limited

Well alright I can't imagine greens going away, they're everywhere and produced by everybody.

But exotics... guess I'll never get to see what 589nm looks like.

No....

Anything which is handheld & over 5mW won't be produced anymore. All the 473's, 589's, 593.5 etc.. pointers will still be produced(if CNI wants to) since they comply with the FDA's <5mW law.

Still waiting for it atm. Maybe Hak or Grey will drop by to give the good news.

Well .. I guess it does not sell well, now when more and more countries regulates handhelds.
To convert a lab into a handheld is firmly in hands of real enthusiast .. with a little help of this community.
And if it means stupid idiots won't get their 500mW easily by clicking few buttons, I have no objections.

That's bummer news. Guess I won't be buying anything from dragon lasers in the future. Yea I hope companies like Skylasers/Laserbtb will be able to keep shipping their products.

In my Sig. Click on Frost or Ivy. Those are both DPSS builds I did. You can still DIY and it is much more satisfying too. Without having to align anything. All you need is a good understanding of building lasers and then it is fairly easy to design an alternate setup for a large CNI module.

Makes me glad I have a CNI 532nm Module sitting near me though. Gonna have to gather the parts for that build sometime in the near future.

If you are able to spring for just one, get the Dragon Lasers 589nm Spartan before they are gone. At 400 dollars you will need to confess to a priest after your thievery.....

....because its a steal :D
