Is there anyway to gauge the power of my lazer Without a LPM.??? Is there like a rule of thumb for a trick to the trade. I'm not looking for an exact power. It says 5 mw But it seems I'm way too bright to only be 5mw. I keep reading stuff about how ebay pens are usually over spec.

Thanks :thanks:

Sometimes the pens are overspec. Its really almost a luck of the draw. Some are over, some are under and then some are were theyre supposed to be. If your really wanted to know you could pay to ship it to a vet or other memer you trust to have it LPM'd

When I first got it input brand new batteries in it I could see the beam. I thought that was kinda crazy cuz I've never seen the beam with a so called 5mw ..... that is what sparked my curiosity I mean there is no smoke in the air and it was a decently lit room........Idk? ???

Most of the '5mw' 405 pens run about 40-50mW, with some as high as 70mW. They pretty much have to run those powers for any kind of customer satisfaction. 5mw of 405nm would be very disappointing, from a brightness perspective. If they were actually at spec, then they wouldn't sell many.

Maybe I'm not very sensitive to 405nm, but I can barely see the beam of a 405nm pen which is usually running at ~130mW or so on half dead batteries.

Sounds like someone has a long history of not wearing proper eye protection.........:p

HA! - Well, I admit I was dangerously stupid with lasers at one point... I mean I was careful, but not nearly as careful as I should have been. Based on my research my eyes shouldn't be much worse from it though. I'm betting sitting in from of a computer 10+ hours a day does me more damage.

I don't know though... I don't see certain wavelengths as well as others, on the other hand I have really good night vision.

If you bought it from ItemQuickShip (aka IQS here on LPF) I can almost guarantee you it's over 5mw. the one I got from him came in at a cool 45mw on my LPM.

best you can do if you want to roughly gauge power is pull the cap and try to focus it, if it is one with a standard aixiz lens (some do, some don't).

If you focus it and can smoke a black piece of plastic just a little, you are way over spec. Probably at least 30-50 mw. I've had a few come in that range. Then again I've had some come in at 10-20mw. But always over 5 on the dozen or so I've had.

You need an lpm if you get into buying lasers seriously. Helps to make sure you are getting what you pay for on the higher power ones, imo.
