How to build driver for laser diode with using only 2 AA batteries suply (as in most common laser pointers) which gives me only 2.4 V (NiMH) or 3V (alcaline batteries) DC ?

LM317 works only with >3 V

my 650nm laser diode needs 2.1-2.5V and 18-25mA.

Thank You

You're either going to need a boost driver or replace your AA batteries with 14500 lithium ion cells. 14500 cells are the same size as a AA battery and are 3.6 volts so combined you will have 7.2 volts which is plenty for a LM317 driver powering a red diode.

Boost drivers can be DIY'ed but are much more difficult and require many more components than a typical linear regulator. Your best bet would be to buy a Flex Drive or other boost driver.
