Default DPSS vs regular laser pointer

Hi all I have a question why DPSS laser are 10x more expensive than my regular laser pointer? even at the same power say both are 100mW but DPSS costing $150 more?
What makes it so expensive and what's special about it?

Normal diode lasers uses a diode only to lase. DPSS lasers uses crystals pumped by diodes. The crystals are expensive depending on quality, and will raise the price.

ok but is there any different in terms of beam quality of 100mW red laser and 100mW DPSS red laser?

To get a red portable you need to pump a rubby rod with a massive amount of energy, flash lamp, in order to get it to laze.
Or it would be a small portable HE-NE laser, which is a gas laser.
Dragon lasers also sells a 671nm DPSS red, but its pointless ( thanks RA_PEICE)

If you are talking about a green DPSS then that is the only kind of green laser that you can buy on the market today.

DPSS - Direct Pump Solid State

DPSS will have better beam characteristics than that of diode lasers.

o-like sells red and 808nm DPSS as well as green.
Do you think it is worth the money to get a 50mW DPSS instead of a 200mW regular laser?

Direct pumped is not usually refered to as DPSS, that's mainly used for Diode Pumped Solid State. Other pump sources are usually flashlamps of various types and would be considered direct pumped...but usually refered to as light pumped or just pumped solid state.

There are DPSS red lasers (not a ruby rod laser), but the output is around 660nm. It is however not portable.

DPSS will have better beam characteristics that laser diodes, except for VSCEL laser diodes. Although VSCEL diodes are quite low powered as of yet.

Common laser diodes suffer from beam astigmatism, and a high rate of divergence due to such a small emitting area. In larger lasing materials, the photons bounce back and forth a much greater distance before exiting the OC end, this results in a beam that has a lower divergence.

Uhm... we've been building portable reds for years... ???

DPSS Red does exist in portables. Dragonlasers sells one.
Wavelength is 671nm.
Also, you're forgetting about Blue DPSS.
The DPSS process is used to get all kinds of different wavelength lasers. Not all are available in portable formats.

Beam quality of DPSS is superior to diode lasers.
O-like does not sell red DPSS.
808nm is the wavelength of a pump diode used in DPSS lasers, but is not DPSS itself...

Why all the confusion?

Thanks for the correction, i didnt know that they sold a red dpss, guess there pointless because of diode strength now. I know weve been building portable reds for a while. However i didnt say green was the only one. Orange, blue, yellow all use DPSS

Thanks for the corection tho

Really?! I remember seeing a portable red DPSS somewhere.....
