Ok... so I keep on hearing that the "Dorcy Jr" is a great beginner host due to various reasons... Ok, I also keep on hearing that they are available at Target and such... but Target has several Dorcy small flashlights.... but none are the Jr.  So, I am actually able to inherit the Dorcy "super 3 watt" if I want... but is this a "Dorcy Jr" that I keep on hearing about?

Here's a Dorcy Jr. :) EDIT: The "Jr." is just a nickname that we use here to refer to this flashlight, it is of course NOT what Dorcy themselves call it.

This one happens to be a ~300mW red ;D

They run off one single CR123(or RCR123 in this case), and are only just above 3 1/2 inches long(host only). Like most of the hosts used, they have a clicky switch on the tailcap. They also have a built-in boost driver, which can be somewhat unstable and is best used with care. I opted to disable the built-in boost driver and use a flexdrive.

indeed. I would agree that the mxdl is a better host if your going to invest the additional funds in a jayrob heatsink. If you don't that extra room just makes it bulky and tacky looking. With the dorcy Jr. you can still leave most everything out without the heatsink and it looks ok cause it's small enough. I do also recommend NOT using the built in driver. I've stopped using it altogether because the spikes above 200ma are just so unstable that you WILL burn out the diode. It's a very easy modification to add the flexdrive.

Yeah, the Dorcy is nice but the MXDL has some big thick heatsinks to go with.
