Is a dollar tree combo led/red laser pointer strong enough to accidentally damage LCD screens on tv's, computers, cell phones, and etc?

Another concern I have is accidentally hitting my laptops isight camera with the pointer while in use. However at the moment I have masking tape over it, so I am unsure how much of the light would penetrate through.

Honestly I wasn't that concerned about it, but I have read that laser pointers can actually burn holes in screens and camera censors. But they did not specify if the pointer in question was a IIIa >5mW one like mine, or one of the more powerful ones that can light matches.

I also saw someone mention that a brief exposure to a laser could actually colorblind a camera. Is there a way to test if this has happened?

Thanks :D

you have no worries with that 5mw laser however I wouldnt recommend directly shining it into a camera

I can tell you a 1.2watt 445nm will destroy an iphone camera quickly

Erm...ok. I was expecting a more informal response, but thanks for the entertaining image.

EDIT:
@B33M Thanks for giving a straight answer. Id hate to have to replace equipment because I accidentally hit it with my pointer. XD

It's called de-railing a silly thread that could have been answered by google or at the very least, the search bar at the top of every page of the forum..

Thats the problem though, everyone seems to have a different opinion of the severity of damage this type of laser can do.

The answers presented on chacha and yahoo answers usually are stern "no" without much explanation, but on this one particular camera forum someone stated that the reflection of the beam off a cotton sheet would be enough to "colorblind" any camera.

I even checked on this forum and users were even posting images of pictures with damaged sensors, but no one ever touched on if they was powerful lasers or average pointer lasers that caused the damage. XD

I mean I have a general understanding of lasers. But by no means am I expert on a subject, which is why I asked. XD

Why do you keep accidentally hitting your camera? Inquiring minds want to know :)

P.S. SBA... That image looks suspect

Did you consider searching Wiki? The forums? Research papers?

Even better, one might consider using common sense and avoid hitting cameras with concentrated streams of coherent photons, since it's not likely a good idea to begin with.

I agree with you, however I don't agree with your approach. You shouldn't be so harsh to the new guys, it tends to scare them away ;)
You should do all the things you did, except in a friendlier, informal way instead of just saying "do this, do that, your question is stupid"

reluttr. post the answer when you find it. I'm new and I don't know the answer either. A lot of people may not know the answer and just won't say anything out of fear, so it would benefit the community. Contribute if you can in whatever way you are capable. You'll probably get a better response ie; :gj: My two cents :)

But yeah...

Wow SBA you really are helpful, I see now what you meant by your service to the forum.

Guess ignoring it was just too easy huh?
