I only use goggles when working in places with reflective surfaces or doing some burning (thing that I don't do much).

Since I know the risks, I setup all carefully before turn the laser on. If I want to show my lasers to someone else, I ever go outside, shinning it to the sky or for far objects, if I wanna show my laser burning some stuff, the second person will wear the goggles and I will stay in a secure position.

I don't think goggles are obligatory in all occasions, I just need to use my imagination and think what can go wrong, depending on this, I decide if goggles are obligatory or not.
