In these times, getting out and giving someone a good old fashioned ass whoopin', even if they need it, will only land yourself in jail on assault charges and probably a civil lawsuit as well. If they happen to be a minor, it'll be even worse. 'Calling the cops' is the correct and appropriate thing to do.
Yeah except the cops don't give a shit about a few kids pointing their little laser pointer at you. They probably think it's some kid with a little keychain laser harassing you. They've got real things to deal with. Even if the cops do care and show up the kids will probably be long gone by then.

Maybe so, but you stopping and beating the crap out of them would turn into a 'real thing for them to deal with'. I somehow doubt a judge would take the argument, 'But he was shining a laser at me!' very seriously either if you got charged with assault.

If you care to try taking the law in your own hands, I do suggest retaining a damn good lawyer first.

That's true, but only if you live in a place where they actually have something to do, here in Cville theres three squad cars on duty all the time, and the most i've ever seen them do is harass some of my longer-haired friends, asking if they had any weapons outside the local convince store. So ya, where I live, if someone were to call the cops about a laser (dumba$$ neighbors have before) all three cars would probably be sent out to confront the "alien" threat. But everywhere is different, and that's just my .02 ...

I don't know. Seeing how it's illegal for someone to aim a laser at a cop I'm sure it would hold water in court. Permanent blindness is a good enough reason I think.

Maybe like someone sticking a knife in your eye

While shining lasers at LEO's isn't smart in any case, it's not illegal on a national level, at least in the US. It's only illegal in certain areas of the country that have passed local legislation on the subject. Same with shining them at cars or other people. Illuminating aircraft is the only thing there are federal laws against.

So like I said. In most places in the country currently, you'd be the guilty party, according to the law, if you took matters into your own hands.

I still think you can get away with self defense. Blindness is a good enough reason

Maybe, but you have to factor in the possibility of getting a judge that doesn't even know what a laser is... heh

It's safer just to just let the law deal with it. Plus I don't think violence should ever really be the first option unless your life is actually in danger, and if that was ever truly the case with me, well, I didn't get my carry permit so i'd have to use lasers or my fists to protect myself...

Sorry, I am just saying it seems like everybody's answer to everything is "Call the cops", and that isn't the way I was raised.

Calling the police is the most responsible thing to do. These hooligans shouldn't be allowed to get away with this.

I was out getting a feel for my new (automatic) pickup after driving in the winter for years in a standard mustang. 2am, in a friend's parking lot, full blown blizzard and 3! copcars rushed in from all directions to give me a warning not to stunt or I would be arrested.... Cops do stupid crap, especially overreacting. Problem is, its never in your favor ^_^

Why do you think pointing them at airplanes/helis is illegal? Why do you think importing them to most countries ( over 5 mw ) is illegal? Why is selling over 5 mw is illegal in most countries as well?

what if someone who had bought a laser walked around time square blinding people? There would be extreme destruction and chaos.
:thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking::confused::confused::confused::confused:

That last part is a silly statement. Destruction? Worst case scenario is that a few some people will end up with small blind spots that they will most likely not notice most of the time. Definitely not funny, but definitely not destruction.

As for being illegal to point at planes, it is so because of the temporary flash blindness and the distraction... not the threat of permanent damage to the pilots' eyes.

Even a laser as powerful as the arctic has an NOHD of only 700 feet... and even then, the realistic chance of injury is quite small.

I have to say its all rather silly. Calling the cops?

Really? Cops are like cockroaches, (no disrespect) if you see one they are everywhere and damn hard to get rid of, no matter what side of the bread your on.
Best to leave them alone.

Jail? would not put MY WORST ENEMY there.

My 2 favorite books:
Rodney King - "Cant we all get along?" and
Reginal Denny - "Keep your ass in the truck!!"

Way to go wading in with an opinion in your first post. That'll get you noticed for the wrong reasons! Although this is the, "General", section, this is a science forum. How about introducing yourself in the, "Welcome", section before diving into debate?

Let's hope there are more layers to you, as your namesake implies.

Who said that you had to shine your laser back at their face?

I think I would have hit their feet with it.

Think about it. Your 16. you have a cheap green laser, you point it at someone for fun (not knowing the dangers), and they turn around and point a really high powered 532 or even 445nm laser at your feet. Just seeing the beam would make you stop.

Hitting their feet = no harm done, and point across IMO.

Morgan,

Will take care of that intro. Apologies to the forum but it ticks me off a bit when people start running around wanting to 'call the cops', like the police are interested in things of this nature.

Only 2 things can happen.
1. They have a LOT to do (i.e. catching robbers, rapists and murders) and will be HIGHLY offended in you disturbing that OR
2. Have NOTHING to do and will get so far into your business that you will wish they would forget your name and go back to doing nothing.

Trust me, cops are like bears. Best left up to their on means for you are crunchy and your squeals amuse them.
