I feel for ya. If it helps you feel better, My career with lasers has survived 3500$ and 7000$ mistakes. In both cases with parts that were going to fail anyways. Still not a fun thing to think about nor, tell the boss about. In both cases the boss had worked with lasers enough to know that these things happen. So I reprimanded myself worse then he EVER did.

FYI for others, Thorlabs sells a moderately inexpensive professional de-canning tool. You then need a desiccant pack in the instrument to keep moisture off the diode face. For certain lab uses, diodes need de-canned to prevent interference patterns forming from the window.

A known flaw with the Nichia parts is that the can windows seal out water, but the adhesive used dissolves in acetone and alcohol. Your not the first to have this happen. I had it on two blues before I learned.

Better diode packages have the can window sealed with hermetically bonded glass frit, and you can clean them once or twice.

Thanks, that makes me feel a little better. I actually found out that I have the funds for buying my second diode but I need a bit extra cash. I'm selling a 1.3 watt 445nm 501b laser for $160, it comes with rechargeables

This may be too much to ask for, but maybe if some people can help me out with like an extra $100 or more that would be great. Or maybe people can donate funds for a second diode, I can put $215 into it. For example five people donated like $20 each, I would very appreciate that to full extent.

Dont throw the diode away, shine it through a diffraction grating if you have one- lazeerer posted some cool observations on PL regarding other wavelengths being emitted from diodes, and some odd things can happen with LED laser diodes. Worth doing if you still have it (ill link to the thread when im not on my phone)

Also...why do you expect people to donate money to you...? It wasn't anyone elses fault that it died. Doesnt make much sense to me to ask for money.

Got my diod in today, already repaired the build. Everything is back to normal now :)

This one averages about 870mw @1.8amps
