Default Confused About chargers

I know the dangers of Li ion batteries and wanted a smartcharger so I wouldn't overcharge my batteries. Is there a reasonably prices smart charger that has an auto cutoff? I don't want just a light to turn on.

Intelligent Charger for LiIon cells part 2 - CPFMarketPlace Does this do the trick?

I'm buying AW 18650 batteries. And a sidenote does Misterwilling's host accept protected 18650's

Default Re: Confused About chargers

I got mine from ebay.. all I know is its called power (brand!) came with 4 Li ion batteries and can charge two at a time.. it automatically cuts off as to stop over charging and it also has a power meter so you can test how much battery power you have left..

Hope that helped -Adrian

Adding to what bobhaha said, If you buy protected batteries you have a low risk of overcharging with resulting damage (it will still overcharge slightly) and non protected batteries need to be monitored while charging. I personally do not trust either and monitor the status of my batteries while they charge(don't want to ruin my hardwood floors or burn the house down). Call me paranoid... meh.

Default Re: Confused About chargers

When I give away a laser to someone I usuly give them this charger from DX sku 4151 as it will charge most all Lipo's, but for my own use I use a ULTRAMAT 12 it's made by Graupner a german co. and we all know the germans make good stuff HeHe [/IMG]
the smaller box is a cell balancer and is not realy needed for our use in the laser field, but is a good investment. the ultramat 12 can charge NiCd, NiMH, LiPo, and lead acid/gel cells it is an automatic charger and discharger. by discharging on here you can see the actual capacity of any cell. this unit will meter what goes in and out of a cell or battery and do it automaticly. the ultramat will charge 5 LiPo cells in series at once @ up to 7 amps.
see the last battery I charged took 315 mah of power.

Peace All...

I have this one: DealExtreme: $8.81 TrustFire All-in-One Charger (for 10430/10440/14500/16340 /17670/18650/CR123A)

It's always served me well. Never had a problem with it. Alternatively, I think this is the exact same charger being sold on CPF, only a few bucks cheaper plus free shipping: DealExtreme: $12.30 UltraFire 3.6/3.7V Battery Charger

Flaminpyro: That'd be a LiPO charger, I think themandalorian was looking for a Li-Ion charger. It'd probably work fine, but it has no holder for the cells.

This actually reminds me of when I was younger... I remember once i put a rechargable battery for charge and forgot about it.. later on that night I went to my room to go to bed and there was this black froth all over the ground and black bit of carbon I guess all over my room including my bed... it was a D size battery and it over charged... I found the casing while cleaning up and it had a split in the side of the casing and had been flattened out by the "explosion"... cant believe no one heard it... so thats why I always buy the chargers with the cut off switchs.. just safer and less mess to clean up!

Default Re: Confused About chargers

themandalorian;

First of all, use a quality lithium ion battery to begin with.

Sanyo, Panasonic and Sony are the ones I have used for years.

They have overcurrent & overpressure protection built in, but no circuit board.

I have never even had one of them vent.

They are much more reliable than the "chinese" types.

This is the 115 VAC charger I use:

It is not a smart charger, but it has always charged my #18650's to the correct voltage.

I also have the UltraFire #139 you showed in your first post.

LarryDFW

P.S. Misterwilling is using my Li-Ion batteries.

Yeah I searched and found a few more on ebay, so this is the one you have? How is it.

I have no clue why they don't put them in the other chargers. I spent 120 for my auto cutoff smart charger. The one that just lights up pissed me off

That charger is considered by many (on CPF at least), to be the best of the cheap li-ion chargers. I also got one and am very pleased with it.
It does cut-off the charge at 4.20V too. Although I still wouldn't charge unprotected cells on it.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to buy a DMM, so you can check the voltage after the charge.

Default Re: Confused About chargers

Thanks eluge. Now it's tenergy or AW batteries!

edit: Well I'm hoping I don't need to but 10 dollars for a DMM from Dealextreme doesn't sound too bad. I don't understand if a battery is rated for 3.7 volts and is protected than does it only go up to 3.7 and not 4.2
