Default Coherent FAP800 IR Laser AM Modulation?

Anyone know how to amplitude modulate a FAP800 laser? I expect if I just put audio on the DC line feeding the laser it would have some amplitude modulation ripples riding on the carrier. Since the unit I have requires about 2.2 volts DC (at many amps) my first thoughts are if I put modulated audio volage on the power bus line it should amplitude modulate the carrier by some amount, I suppose the higher the voltage (up to the safe limit) the more modulation percentage. Curious if anyone has any voltage and current information for doing such on this or another type of IR diode.
