No, I'm not talking Spartan Laser, blow everything up, from Halo 3. Nor am I talking about a simple laser sight for a rifle. I closer example to this is what the US military and police are using for dazzling someone to get them to stop by producing such an optical glare that they can't see where they are going. But this Chinese laser rifle is more than just something that makes trigger's your eye's automatic brightness control (thus making everything else look dark temporarilly) so that you can't procede toward the officer in a threatening manner, or making them flinch and turn away just long enough for the police to get the upperhand against an unruly criminal. This Chinese laser rifle is actually meant to BLIND someone. As in make their entire vision field go black, for the rest of their lives, by physically damaging the entire retina.

Read about this dangerous Chinese laser weapon at

Here's a news story about how a Chinese laser weapon (though a different one than the one in my op post, cause this thing is NOT a rifle, but rather a 77 pound laser turret) was used on a Russian ship to injure the right eye of a US military helicopter pilot.

This is REALLY OLD news, but I don't know if anyone here yet mentioned it.

Basically some US soldiers were conducting surveillance (spying) from a helicopter on a Russian ship in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the pilot got hit by a high powered blinding laser beam (not dazzler, but actual permanent eye damage, costing the helicopter pilot his flying license due to the impaired vision), fired from the Russian ship. After the investigation they determined some info on the laser, but not all of the technical details were made public. I have listed important laser specs down here, putting ???? in specs that the info isn't publicly available, and filled in whatever I have been able to find.

Laser manufacturer = Norinco
Laser model = ZM-87
Laser device weight = 77 pounds
Laser type = pulsed Nd:YAG
Average power = 15mW (taking into account average power of pulse, pulse on time and pulse off time)
Average power of pulse = ???? (likely many watts)
Peak power of pulse = ???? (depends on pulse shape, but likely many times average power of pulse)
Pulse on time = ????
Pulse off time = ????
Pulse energy = average power of pulse * pulse on time = ????
Cycle duration = pulse on time + pulse off time = ????
Repeat rate (pulses per second) = 1 / cycle duration = ????

As you can see, there's a lot more we DON'T know about this laser than what we do know.

Here's the article.

That's odd. In a laser forums, I would have thought this thread would have gotten more attention than it has.

The Chinese on the magazine (third line of text on bottom left, the one with the second half being red) says "China Special Ops Police: Laser Dazzler Rifle"

Logically speaking, if you had a weapon the size of a rifle, the only benefit to a military unit over that of a conventional rifle will be the silent activity, hence the designation as being "special ops". There is absolutely no benefit of having a laser over a rifle for a normal war, the rifle bring far more lethal and effective.

And to add to InfinitusEquitas's comment, the magazine said "10 2004", presumably meaning October 2004.

the funny thing is... most of us have supremely effective anti-crime batons on hand at all times, we are just smart enough(i hope) to understand exactly what it would do to another human. Using lasers as crowd control or real weapons is going to have the same effect every "completely new" battlefield tactic has, which is 10 years of WTF factor. Most people would have no idea what is going on when they get a direct laser hit to the eye. To be fair, most of us would have at least a second or two of, "what in the world?!" before we logically fell upon lasers as the culprit and only because we think about them all day. Blindness; long term(permanent) disorientation, the WTF moment of getting hit with a laser is what it sounds like the whole idea of this weapon is based on. If only military laser research was spent on scientific laser research, and they'll probably can the whole project since those dummies cant figure out how to make Nikola's Death Ray

also, LsK80st's post with the ads in it look like Amaz@n suggestions for Sawyer(James Ford) from LOST
