I am not familiar with C-mount diodes so could someone enlighten me? There appears to be a hole in the middle; is this for a mounting screw or is it the output aperture? How would it be mounted? I hear it just needs to be mounted to a TEC cooled copper base... Where is the light emitted? How would the output be focused/collimated?

Sorry for the seemingly noobie questions...

thanks

I also was was wondering about c mounts, helpful link. I want to see how it powers on unfocused, i know the light comes from the top. Do c-mount diodes allow for a smaller size beam and such?

c-mounts don't really allow for a smaller beam. The 'die' size is generally bigger, and the majority of them are infrared, so the beam wont be quite as good as one you would get from a 5.6mm diode.

As far as the diode itself, it works like any other laser diode, it just has a different housing. The die is on the top and the light goes forward. You use the hole to mount it, usually against a piece of metal for heat sinking, and then just collimate it like you would any other diode. The only difference is that they font really make an aixiz-like module for these, so you have to get a bit creative with lens mounting if you are trying to make a hand-held.
