You said under $50, which the 303/301 is. The 532nm 303/301s are very good for the price - I'm amazed at how cheap they are actually, for what you get. See above links though, for something a little more pricey.

You can even get the 150mW XPL 301 for less than $50. Here:

The XPL 301s are actually manufactured differently than the mass-produced 301s, they are produced using better components and with superior quality control. Though it is hard not to be superior to the quality control of those junk 301s you see everywhere...

From what iv'e read alot seem to be ok with this laser. A true 1W output should be right. Just make sure it has a glass lens instead of a acrylic one. They mention its kinda weird to hold but for the money its a decent starter. Its not easy to take apart if any issue's were to happen as I believe alot of glue is used in assembly.
1W is no joke and be careful with those cheap glasses it comes with
I don't know, they seem to call it anything from a military laser to a Gattling Gun type
