I for one, would like to see what these can do, and if they are better than what we have/use to date.

It's $179.99 for one of these, soooooooo if we get 20 people, that's everybody putting in $9 to buy one, and have somebody take it to the brink. Hopefully we can get 1W out of it with a g-1, and not have to kill it. But then just kill it anyways for fun.

Anybody want to do it?

Heres the originial thread.

And the link to buy one

These are rated higher than what we already use and have. it's all in the thread.

Anybody interested, lets do this thing! I'll do my part of $9 at least. The more people we get to commit to donate, the less it costs.

I don't have the setup to properly test one, but I am willing to contribute if we can find someone who will do it for us.

If Dave thinks its worth while I'll chip in. But by the looks of the other thread, it may not be worth it for an extra 100mWs.

Still. Either way, it's something new, that we haven't tried yet. And if we get 20 people, that's $9 a piece. That's less than a pizza, to try something new. And to test something different in the name of the forums

I hear your point, but who's going to spend ~$200 to buy a drive that only puts out ~100mW more than a $40 sled?

I agree. I'm not saying everybodys gonna go get one of these now, I would just like to say that we as a group have accomplished 1W of 405. Hell, maybe with the g-1 lens, we can get one to live at 1W, at least for an hour total runtime

I hate to burst bubbles.... but to achieve additional layers of burning, isn't it just a matter of ever so slightly adjusting the focal point of the laser beam, to go deeper ?

Faster burners require a more powerful laser, because they need to create the same type of dots as a slower burner, but they need to create each dot faster. With multiple layers, there is no need to create each dot faster, so the laser shouldn't need to be any more powerful to burn 4 layers than to burn 2. Hitting lower layers isn't a power issue, it's a focal point issue (I believe).

In fact, you linked to a Fry's site for the BDR-206MBK. As far as I can tell from Pioneer here, this is actually a max 6x BD-R burner.

To be clear, I made up all of that theory on layers vs. speed and the relation to diode power. So I could certainly be dead wrong, don't take what I said for gospel. That's just what makes sense in my head.

Even though it's rated higher than what we have today, it doesn't seem like we could get more out of it?

Either way, it's alright in my book. I'm happy where were at, but if there is a possibility of going higher, I'm all in

If these do work out though and there is a demand, i'm sure laser-xh.com will start selling the sleds for a LOT less than $200

I think that to make it worth while it would need to be a true murder, ie , not stop at 1000 mw , someone has already taken a 12x to way greater than 1000mw and it's still alive.

Also by the rating of the original 12 x diodes this may be a "beefier" 12x , meaning it could potentially take more of a besting at higher mA's.

Who took one way greater than 1000mW? I missed that for sure

Also, I do in fact want this to be a murder fund. I want this diode to die, whatever it may be

Also keep in mind murdering a single diode is not going to get you enough data to be
called "valid".
As you know, laser diodes vary in their efficiency, how would you know from a single
one if it was a good, average or bad one? In order to truly get an idea of the capabilities,
you'd need to "murder" at least three of them, IMHO.

Now if only we could lay our grabby mitts on IgorT's torture chamber.....

I believe Hemlock_Mike ran one at over 1W for some number of seconds before realizing and correcting it.
