So I love my 445nm 1.6 Watt laser that is one of jayrobs kits. I've always wanted a Batman projector to shoot the Batman symbol on low lying clouds and sides of buildings. Now I work in a machine shop that machines glass ceramic and sapphire so I have access to high precision cnc machines if need be. I want to build something that I can attack to the end of my laser and it will act as a filter to produce the Batman symbol. I was thinking of maybe acid etching a lens or machining a recess into a lens and filling it with high temp black epoxy. What's your take on the idea. And do you have any ideas? If your idea works ill send you one for free ( laser not included)

One way that comes to mind is to use a large collimating lens like
20mm or a bit bigger to start. When you parallel the beam it will
be dimmer, but nice and 'fat'.

Pass that through a CNC'd logo which would clip the edges to make
your shape. Could cut in aluminum or non transparent plastic.

Id start with looking through a-140 internal optics for something
appropriately coated and preferably glass..

Other than a scanner, this would probably give you the cleanest quality
'spot'. Trying to carve optics may prove to be time consuming.. nothing more.

The brightness would suffer a bit, but may work. I have a pic somewhere of a
fattened up red beam with a 35mm or so lens..

Ok well this is a step in the right direction. I had a feeling this was going to be harder then I thought. As most things are. Please post the picture if u find it.

My first suggestion would require a custom diode mount to get the lens close
enough, and would get complicated..

You probably have the aixiz glass already.. What you can also do is get
a set of optics from a c@$!0 projector, think flaminpyro sells sets for cheap..

When you get them, set your lasers beam out of parallel so it makes a
larger spot (counter clockwise) turn, and place the larger lens in front at varying
distances.

Once you find your distance, you will have to remember how many turns out
of the lens on the laser already, and make a mount for the second lens.

The beam emitted would be the same diameter of the second lens and a
long parallel beam, just really fat :D

I will look for the pic when I get a chance. I posted it here somewhere, but
cant find it ATM.

The problem with projections like in the movies is that to get a beam powerful enough to shine on clouds, you usually end up with a beam that is fairly bright itself. Even if you had a batman logo shaped beam it would likely just seem like a glow on the clouds, you wouldn't get much contrast.

Well if you did manage to get something bright enough, on clouds, You would be able to see it.. But that's about it. People off axis would only see a glow in the clouds. You have to remember. A cloud isn't solid like a projection screen. Most movie effects aren't possible in reality.

That's why my goal is only on low lying clouds (1000 ft). And I think that goal is reasonable with a 1.6 Watt 445nm.

You also have to remember that 1.6W isn't much when it's not in a tight collimated beam.

To put it in perspective. Imagine if it was spread out in a 360 degree sphere like a normal light bulb.. A 1.6W light bulb wouldn't be very bright now, would it?

Oh....now I get it. So I'm probably better off using the 1000 lumen torch flashlight I'm building?

you should use a scanner instead, even though you can't fill in the shapes with a color, the outline will always be waaaay brighter, in batman forever i think this is how the riddler logo in the sky is done, in fiction anyway

I think that in the movie, it was just made by computers.

Anyway it is going very hard or impossible to achieve :yabbmad:

It's neither hard nor impossible to do given a projector with sufficient power. However, it's viewing angle will be extremely limited. More than 10 degrees off axis or so, people will just see a glow in the clouds if they notice anything at all. (most people don't look up)

However having a projector of sufficient power aimed up in the sky isn't really a wise thing to do anyway without doing it legally.. Since your going to have a visible beam of light coming right back to you that screams to law enforcement "I'M OVER HERE!"
