Australian Oficial Laser BAN - must read !!!

A friend today told me to check out an article in the the paper after reading I was pissed off. Here is word for word what it said:

The Federal Government has banned the importation of high intensity laser pointers, which have been used in attacks on passenger jets landing at airports.

The July 1st 2008 ban will make it a criminal offense to import a Laser pointer stronger that 1mw ( WTF ),
home affairs minister Bob Debus said.

He said that to make the ban truly effective he was calling on states and territories to urgently establish uniform national laws to support the commonwealths controls.

"I have written to Police Ministers calling on them to put in place legislation which imposes fines and jail terms for possessing pointers without an appropriate exemption," he said

The ban follows incidents where lasers with the potential to blind pilots have been pointed into to cockpits of jets landing at Sydney airport.

In one co-ordinated attack, four lasers were simultaneously pointed at one arriving aircraft.

Legitimate users such as surveyors , astronomers, and those in the construction and mining industries can apply for exemptions.

1. If you live in Australia and were ever thinking of getting a laser get it NOW before it's to late.
2. if you agree with me please sign the petition http://www.gopetition.com.au/petitions/anti-laser-ban.html

I have a question :
If I signed up for astronomy websites and got really interested in astronomy do you think that would be a reasonable excuse for having a laser if I got caught?

This would be a question for a lawyer and/or your legislator.

Re: Australian Oficial Laser BAN !!!

That is pretty lame!

I dont know how this legislation will be implemented - it could be such that you need a license prior to using a laser, and there will be criteria to meet.. perhaps amateur astronomy would work. They could also implement something that makes using a laser legitimate as long as its application is reasonable.

Also, if the ban is just on importing, not using, these lasers, it can be easily circumvented - it might be as easy as shipping them pot-modded down to 1 mW and re-adjusting it to full power once in your posession.

Step 1=Import completely legal Aixiz modules.
Step 2=buy dvd burner for $20 or blu-ray player/burner.
Step 3=buy MXDL flashlight from dx.
Step 4=Build laser from above legal components.
Step 5=Sell to someone else in AU for massive profit.

Thats awful :/
I doubt theyll actually be able to ban it everywhere... here in the uk inflation's being a twat n a half, and everything (from what Ive read in the papers etc) is going arse over tits for Gordon Brown, so it wouldnt suprise me if (although it sounds silly) there was a revolution of some kind soon (within a decade or two).

Signed it... Got my girlfriend too aswell.
Time to spam to my friends methinks (Y)

No , it was probably just illegal to sell them IN AU if they are > 1mW , Like it is here in britain, you can import to the country but you can't put them on the market.

And I know what you mean about Gordon Brown ;D ( Damn hidden fuel taxes, Did you know that 70% of the price of your petrol in the UK goes to the goverment in taxes ? so basically they get about £0.71 for every £1.00 you buy of petrol , Sorry for taking it off topic, but I felt like a rant ;D )

Anyway, I hope lasers will get unbanned in AU although maybe they well make an expemption for hobbyists ;D

This is how you turn a negative into a positive!

(stock up on the aixiz housing now, because they're typically 5mW which is also banned)

Damn...

Oh well, all the high powered lasers I want will of arrived before the ban goes into effect :) From then on it'll just be DIY, and it's much easier to get away with that ;)

Yeah, I'll find a way to get my future professional lazors into Oz some other way. I've got some cool things coming in before July so I got no probs.

It says you can have a permit to import them.
What caught my eye was use for Construction.
I wonder if thats for sellers of laser levels or just general builders, as i am a builder...although they would have to be curious as to why a builder may want a WL or Nova laser...or any for that matter =P

I mean a laser pointer wont help much on a construction site unless your pointing things out on high ceilings or something of that sort =/

Only lasers I see used on site are low power lasers for guidelines. This ban sucks, I thought it was already in place though, I stopped waiting for my DX30's to arrive ages ago thinking they were siezed.

Ill try my luck with the whole construction part of things. But i doubt they would allow it, unless ofcourse its done at a local Department of Fair Trading office or something like that, where people behind the desk dont like to think too hard...

Everyone in australia must get revenge on bob debus and blind him with our lasers!
I'd better get saving myself for a 30mw green pointer from optotronics...
