Anyone know how 473n light is made?

With that CNI, I've gotta warm up the laser with my hands first before it'll work, at least when it's cold out.

KTPs and LBOs are happiest at about 40C I believe, anything too hot or cold and the structure won't do its job. I can see this being a problem, I find it most commonly a problem with my green, surprisingly the blue and yellow don't seem to mind as much. perhaps because they tend to get hotter naturally, where as the green is more efficient and absorbs less of the light? (thus it heats slower)

That would seem to make sense ultimatekaiser, although perhaps the thermal expansion/contraction properties are different for the different crystals, which would also come into play here

the garnet and the ortho-vanadate dont tend to mind as much about the temperature, but they still need cooling, just usually not as much. You are right however, and different crystals have different properties, including their structure/nonlinear coefficient, the amount of dopant used, coatings (if applicable), thresholds, temperature, damage thresholds, etc. affecting how they perform.

I've made a blue before, using a 3x3x1 YAG and an 3x3x10 Lithium Triborate. (LBO) its quite a challenge, as the LBO is quite picky, and narrow, so its hard to get it stabilized compared to green. (and it has to be pretty focused to achieve threshold in the LBO)

Doublers do tend to like being warm...now figure out why Raffleticket's 561 likes it cold! Him and I talked about it a little bit, it puzzles us both. I have also seen one review of a 473 handheld that likes it cold. Wish I had the money to buy a 561 from CNI, see if it behaves the same way as Raffle's.

I don't think its crystalline DPSS...only 561nm lasers I've seen are OPSL. (Optically pumped semiconductor disk lasers)

I'll see if I can get an answer for you

Edit: 488 and 550 are OPSL, and can be produced with SHG direct doubling of an IR diode with a KTP, which would explain the heat as well as the low power. (expensive diode) You'd be directly feeding the KTP, and so it would quickly heat up. And a copper block will only take the heat off so fast without a TEC. This would explain it liking a cooler environment. As it would take longer for the cavity to heat up. Perhaps 561 is similar?

Additional thoughts: every set of crystals is different too, which is why they have low yields sometimes (as crazy has noted before) they all behave differently, and after production , they are probed with a hene usually to find the places/pieces with the correct nonlinear coefficient. One KTP may have optimum at 40c while another may like 43C and at a slightly different alignment.

With BiBO the life was difficult too. Even getting microchips they were not stable as we wanted. :undecided:


For administrators: If it is possible please change a thread title "473n" to "473 nm"

473nm, same as 532nm use 808nm laser to pump a crystal.

532nm: The 808nm pumps a crystal that lases at 1064nm, and then the Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (short: KTP) doubles the 1064nm to 532nm.

473nm: The 808nm pumps a crystal that lases at 946nm, and then the LBO, another nonlinear optic / crystal doubles the 946 to 473.

Simply put, the KTP is a more efficient doubling medium than the LBO (or others) used for blue, and lasing at 1064nm is more efficient than lasing at 946nm.
