I saw one of these at a local hobby store and snagged one. It is interesting on it's own, but of course i had to shoot it with lasers. :D

They come in different colors, but i got the clear one.
The link below shows what they look like (there may be better, i just grab this).

Amazon.com: Rattleback Space Pets - One Space Pet: Toys & Games

These pics i took of mine... Getting lased.

They have some crazy internal refraction.

Hey I havent heard of one of those for what must be 30 years, I always wanted one back then and I think it was a TV commercial that got my interest. The closest thing I could find that would even begin to rattleback was an industrial box cutter I had on a formica table top.
It is interesting that you are only mentioning what a laser does while hitting it, could you please put up some video showing it rattling back? some of them things alternated MANY times and seemed a freak on physics!

Yeah, I didn't go into detail on their unusual properties. What is funny is i got it mainly because of that. I too am a physics nerd. ;)

It was crazy seeing it work. They do slow quick and "rattle", then start turning the other way. When spinning clockwise it almost feels like a gyroscope, you can kind of feel it resisting.

That won't be a problem. I don't have one on me now, but i will get a vid up as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks for looking guys!

ATB,
John
