This has already been posted to the forum today. Having it up again causes no harm tho.

Sorry that guy learned the lesson the hard way... If that is true. I'm wondering how he could point soooo steadily to his eyeball, even without moving the eyeball to create a perfect spot in his retina like the picture shows. For sure that picture is not from him. You know... sensationalism again.

I have no reason to not believe it.... I have no proof it is
true or not.. We don't know how powerful the Laser was.

But I like to err on the side of safety and tend to believe in
the Human stupidity factor...

Showing this 1000 times won't hurt and maybe wake up the
"experts" to the possibility of this happening.

I'm waiting on the PL guys to jump on it, and for the next round of LPF-bashing to begin.

Aah, misuse of lasers... just this morning on the local news, the *headline* story was how usage of laser pointers have dramatically increased around the Montreal intl. airport to the point where pilots report an incident nearly every week.

These are the same dumbasses that are going cause the Canadian laws concerning lasers and laser pointers to be changed and severly restricted, just like in australia and the US.

It's so very sad. One of last countries free of any laser-related restricting laws soon may become just like the other places. Better stock-up on greenie modules before the axe drops down.

Prevent it. You have a smaller nation. Work with your regulators.
Otherwise you will get some globalized law, and once it place, it WILL be hard to change. This was never a problem until the prices of DPSS green went way, way, down. Suggest some form of 70 question, online, multiple choice test and a cheap license or permit for powers over Class IIIA, and use the profits towards Customs enforcement. USE IT OR LOSE IT!

Transport Canada and Industry Canada are a lot more sane then the US system, and they tend to listen to citizens.

Once a globalized rule gets started, thanks to the internet and/or treaty we will ALL have the same rules.

Ask yourself what might happen if they start getting illuminations at Chinese airports? Bye, Bye DPSS.

You know what, this is kind of like the Darwin awards. This kid injured himself through stupidity, but he's 15 years old. I'm unsurprised to hear about a 15-year-old doing something boneheaded. Fortunately the only victim of his negligence was himself. I feel that if someone wants to burn their eyes out, more power to them as long as they don't injure others. I'm sure this will be an unpopular suggestion here on LPF where every teenager seems to think that they have acquired a 40-year-old's life experience (and many actually are mature beyond their years) but perhaps an age limit should be considered? There's a reason you have to be over 18 in most US states to buy a pocketknife over the counter.. why not have the same restriction on lasers?

... Laser pointers must have a age reversing effect. If we go by the "18" rule, the group of 21 year olds illuminating the runway at Cleveland Hopkins lost 3 years of aging simply by buying a pointer. It took 18 years off the 35 year old AT&T technician who illuminated the chopper? Man, there must be a heck of a market to sell these things to vain MILFs who want a anti aging pointer. ( I'm Being Sarcastic)

...Education and enforcement are the only way this situation is going to get better. Proving the user understands the risks and responsibilities, is the only way to go. The new US rule is going to be up to 5 years of prison/300,000$ for intentionally illuminating a aircraft.

...I'm sad my tax dollars will be used to incarcerate some one who should not have had her/his hands on the device in the first place, at 40,000$ a year or more for food, health care and shelter, when I cannot afford cable TV or a new car.

...I've met 14 year olds who were competent enough to handle a rifle, alone, hunting. It comes down to parenting and training.

Age wont solve this problem, a new law will not solve this problem, education and enforcement will.

... I can agree with the teens here, that some 30 year olds are down right stupid. In Ohio we have a nasty law regarding science experiments in schools. A poorly trained teacher tried to pour more alcohol into a flame demo. Her source was a gallon glass jug. The vapor pressure in the bottle headspace was high enough for a explosion, and she burned 4 students including her son and a teenage fashion model. Hence a new law depriving the rest of the students of cool science demos. She had a BSED, but little lab training and no recurrent training.

Rather then train the teachers, the knee jerk reaction was to hire a consultant. The consultant wrote a law banning a lot of fun stuff. Trained, competent teachers howled in protest, but it was too late.

So it comes down to proving you are competent and being proactive.
If you want a good law, you have to participate in its writing. That is "Founding Father's Course one zero one"

How do you prove competence? You administer a test.

I dont think the kids was that stupid.

1. Everyone brags about popping balloons, burning tape ect.
2. Goggle are way too expensive for a teen to buy.
3. He want to make a light show that he's seen numerous time on the web, concerts, events, ect.

He is only 15. What do expect? If he was 20 I'd say he was a moron, but he is only a kid. An impressible kid. I was smart enough to find a forum before playing with a dangerous tool, but most are not. There is not to many laser websites out there. And there are less that take the time to tell a n00b to use goggles. I cant blame him for being stupid because the hype, and lack of accessible safety knowledge. I dont know about you, but I almost died twice before 16. You cant expect a 15y to have the foresight we do.

All very true, I know teens (several from here in fact) that are wise beyond their years, as I said before.. but I feel that there is still something to be said for life experience helping to remove the stupid from young people growing up.

Yeah, I saw that article last night, linked elsewhere...

I can see vision loss, cones catching a flash of 150mW 532nm might never recover, but an actual BURN like that off of a mirror bounce?

I think the kid is still not telling the whole truth of how he got that. :/

With divorce rate ~50%, child rape, abuse, and the dysfunctional family as common as a McDonalds, you will never get the stupid out of kids. There will always be a high percentage of stupid out there. And stupid has the ability to get others caught up in it too. You can try to educate, limit, and enforce all you want, it will never change the fact the Joe Blow community is made up of mostly stupid people, making more stupid people.

It would help a lot if decent laser safety glasses were a little less expensive. Some that you find are $90 or more. I do a lot of welding and have been around welding for about 45 years. Welding glasses and lens have come down in price from what they used to be, the laser glasses should be the same way, I have had my share of flash burn and it is not pleasant or intentional.
