405nm or 447nm? Need advice!

Hey guys,

I have recently been thinking about the next wavelength I could add to my <5mW collection and I took a quick peak at LaserGlow's website and decided upon the following:

1) The 5mW 405nm Electra ($179 if bought around New Year's)
2) The 5mW 447nm Hydra ($230 if bought around New Year's)

Now I know I already asked people's thoughts on the Electra asking how dim it was and seeing how rhd's tool showed 447nm at 5mW already is dimmer then 654nm at 5mW I got lost.

I would quickly just want to know what do you all think? I realize none of these are going to be bright but I was curious if one did things the other can't. I believe 405nm will turn blue if aimed at white paper, but I don't know if 447nm does any cool tricks like that.

Thank you very much,

-Alex

I have a Laserbtb HL445-1000 and a 301 Violet (been told it is about 25mw)....the 445 has a beautiful blue beam that I find to be extraordinary. The 301 405 is much dimmer with a laser dot that has horrible divergence...however on a dark night the laser beam from it is startling to see. The 405 Violet is 192 times dimmer than a green laser, all because the human eye (cones) are far less sensitive to its wavelength. However shine it on certain objects and they glow (fluoresce) amazingly bright. Eventually I will "pop" for a Laserbtb HL405-500... However I chose the 445 as first choice and I am not sorry that I did. The 445 cannot do the same "tricks" as can the 405...

Thanks for sharing Wallyl!

I mean I really want both, but I can only afford one and both are amazing wavelengths in their own rights :p

I suggest you go with the Blue as your first choice... or you can buy the blue and get a 301 Violet from E-bay on a "buy-now" deal for about $10.00. It is enjoyable to use and the price is right. If you cannot find one--I will be happy to do so for you. I have bought five in Red, Green, & Violet---all work nicely...not "high end" but perfectly useable. Just use a conservative duty cycle and they will last a long time.

I was thinking about getting a 405nm eBay pen so I can get a feel for that wavelength. I'll most likely end up getting 447nm since it's dim, but not as dim as 405nm and it looks pretty awesome! :D

I have one....very dim....the E-Bay pens that is and an E-Bay 301 Violet 405...

Just went outside with the 301 405 and the HL445-1000... There is a full moon out....the Blue was bright and the beam looked awesome (as always)...the Violet was very difficult to see the beam at all... IMHO the Blue 445 is a far more beautiful laser beam than is a 532 Green...

I got a "5 mW" 405 off ebay, and it measured in at 90 mW. Quite a bargain for 5$.

Just my 2 cents. Its a cool wavelength since its one the edge of our vision and it causes things to fluoresce.

Haha that's why 405 is awesome(as I said) it's right at the edge of what we see! I'll probably get a 405 pen since they are most likely above 5mW, so they would be bright(kinda :wtf:)

Is there a reason you are buying that specific model? $200 for 5mW of a common wavelength is ridiculous, regardless of the quality or company reputation. You can build one with high quality and accurate output yourself for $30. That way you can easily afford both.

^^^^

405 is a bit more expensive, but nothing like $200 for 5mw.

Hey Grix,

I completely agree that $200 for 5mW of 447nm is quite pricey, but to me I enjoy LaserGlow's products and as mentioned before I don't mind spending the money for something which I know will last me for years(not saying the others won't).

I know some people find this completely ridiculous but I enjoy buying from LaserGlow, others enjoy buying from Wicked Lasers, it's just their thing :p

If you decide on the 405nm 301 from ebay, I have a suggestion. I run 2 16340 ultrafire 1200mah 3.7v batteries with it and it runs twice as bright with so far a long life. Those batteries just tend to work better for me as far as power output. 301's are great for getting a feel for a particular wavelenght. All but 1 of mine are still alive and kicking. Only one with issues is the 532nm green that that speced out to 92mw, and its only teporarily out of commission due to a scratched focusing lens. Just my suggestion. Not great quality, but nice for what they are.

I dont see the point buying a 5mW 405 laser really as you will hardly be able to see the beam it but if you want it still you should consider buying a higher power like a pen from laserbtb maybe? 447 sounds cool tho. But you should first maybe buy a cheap pen from ebay, i did that too and i fell in love with the 405 so i later bought the 100mW from laserbtb and its enough for me.

Thank guys for all the answers!

I decided I will first get a 405 pen from eBay and see where I go from there. Knowing those 405's are over-spec it should teach me how to use it safely and I might buy a quality Class IIIb+ laser after :D
