200mW 532nm VS 500mw 635nm

I thought this would be the best place to post this, sorry if it is not. But i am trying to figure out what would be brighter. A 200mW green or a 500mw 635nm. I think they would be about the same, wouldn't they. I am making a phr 805t and i want something that is bright that will amaze everyone (i don't want a 2W blue because i think my parents are not ready for that). Thanks!

Green Is More Visible, you would see the beam clearer

i can get more technical if you like, but that about sums it up :)

mW to mW i know green is more visible, but this is a 500mw 635nm and a 200mw green. The 635nm is more visible than 650/660nm but still not as visible as 532nm, but would the 300mW of extra power make up for the gap in visibility between the green and the red?

Here is a very rough estimate to determine brightness.


Beam: (532nm 200mw) vs. (635nm 500mw)

The reason why 200mW of 532nm is brighter than 500mw of 635nm is because the former is nearer to the peak wavelength sensitivity if the human eye. You will need a lot more mW of red to match the green.

Sorry for that, i knew about the human eye sensitivity, i just didn't know if there was enough 635nm colour to equal the 200mW of green. So i know 200mW green is brighter than 500mW 635nm. So what are your opinions on colour (what one do you like the best for shining around outside) 500mW 635nm or 200mw 532nm? 500mW of 635nm is still has a good visible beam doesn't it?

500mW of 635nm will be visible. IMO, 200mW will be better for shining outside. It will be super visible and will attract lots of attention, so watch out.

Very true, people these days just think that everyone with a laser is an idiot. Most people in Australia actually think it is illegal to have a laser altogether. So Zeebit, you like green more than red. What about you jakeyboii?

Your opinion is appreciated, and how many mW's of 445 do you need to get the same visibility as a 200mw green? Just a guess would be nice, would 500 - 600mW of 445nm equal a 200mw green? Zeebit, would you still choose green if you had the option of blue as well (not for power, for colour)?

Um, they're classed as illegal firearms, so they are illegal(Over 1mW in pointer/handheld form).

I cannot give an estimate as I do not have a 445nm yet. I can't quite undersaand your second question.

I talked government weapons people (whatever they are called), apparently they are not classed as firearms, they are classed as "prohibited weapons". I know it is illegal to posses a laser pointer over 1mW. I said "Most people in Australia actually think it is illegal to have a laser altogether" which I meant by they think you cant have labby's or 1mW pointer, as in NONE at all.
@ Zeebit: Would you prefer green still or blue?

Not sure I completely agree with that calculator though. It's good for a rough idea, but to me personally, I have 300mW of 640nm and 400mW of 532nm in my laser projector, and even then I still get a fairly decent yellow, of course a bit on the green side. I'd say 532nm is probably around 1.5-2x as bright as 635nm, not 3.36x like the calculator.

I understand beam and dot visibility are not equivalent. Yes, our eyes are most sensitive to 555nm light, reflected (meaning dot) but beam visibility is also impacted by the wavelength, or it's color. Shorter wavelengths may be more visible, than longer ones (Raleigh). In the end, green is still more visible, but whether 200mW green versus 500mW red is twice as visible depends if you're talking about beam versus dot.

I agree with you on the calculator, i don't think 532nm is 5.37 times brighter than 445nm. Can anyone back this up for me, or do you think it is about right? Just saw your post, I am talking about the beam. :)
