Is a 10mw or 15mw laser safe?

I was going to buy one, but before I bought one I realized I was quite careless with my 5mw laser and postponed buying one because I have somewhat bad eyes already and want to avoid making them worse.

I like to shine the laser pointer at various highly reflective surfaces to see the interesting patterns. I like using my laser to play with the cat, he is so cute. I like shining it at mirrors and admiring the awesomeness. I like using it in small dark rooms, because that's all I have in my house. I like sharing my experience with family and friends. I even like shining it on my hand or feet sometimes. And I definitely like not having to not use eye protection. About the only safety precaution I take is to make 100% sure I do not under any circumstance point the laser at mine or anyone else's face or eyes.

Given the above preferences, would you say a 10mw green laser (from optotronics) or a 15mw green laser (from Dragon Lasers) is safe?

well safe is relative.
if your going to do what you say your going to do. i would say stay away from anything china made and over 25mw.
but everything under is a gray zone.
if its a 10mw laser and true 10mw then your almost perfectly fine.
almost is the key word there are some rare instances were some peoples eyes could be damaged.
the reason your reckless with a 5mw laser is because there pointless.
you can damage your eyes more with a flashlight.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO
thats a 10mw+
that means it will ouput no less than 10mw but as a good chance of being much much higher.
ive had a 50mw green laser doing 105mw after ir filter.
go with something not made in china.

Good luck finding that! :D

I think an Optotronics pointer is a good choice. Just email or call Jack (is that his name?) and ask for one that is not higher than XXmW.

I'd say 5mW is the absolute max for pointing around with reflective surfaces near without safety glasses.

For playing with a pet I would advise nothing stronger than a max 5mW laser.Even a 1mW or 0.5 mW should be more than adequate.

I echo the other opinions. From the description of how you like to use it (i.e. no goggles, shining off reflective surfaces) I would recommend you stick with <5mW. Matter of fact for just shining around indoors <5mW is enough power.
