A photon is a photon - the wave property is simply how they move...a laser by definition is all the photons concentrated, and moving in one direction, thus creating the laser beam. 0nm is not possible, as that is the measurement of the spectral wavelength - at 0nm, it would not exist ! 1nm would be very, very tiny - since a nm is a measurement, not an object.

Basically, by concentrating more and more photons in the laser beam - you are increasing the power of the laser beam - nothing more. a 200mw laser has more photons beaming out than a 20mw laser, etc, etc, etc... make sense ?

Default Re: 100% Energy density LASER

I aksed two physics teachers and they said that is not possible, because A) photons dont have the same property off mass therefore dont actually act like atoms, eg arent held together and are abl to occupy the sme space and B) because nothing is 100% efficient.

Maybe "kilojoule" - 1000 joules?

Another thing of interest - in theory the smallest point a laser can be focused down to is dependent on its own wavelength - something close to 0nm (around 100nm or so is X-rays, lower than that it becomes gamma radiation) could focus a dot down to very close to that size (that is if you could find a way to make a gamma laser - can't imagine what you'd use for mirrors or a lens!).

^X-rays go smaller than 100 nm. *Cu-K,alpha is the most common radiation used for x-ray diffraction of materials, and it's wavelength is 1.5418 A, or .15418 nm. *

But yes, the smallest dot is very nearly coordinated to the wavelength of the light, which is why violet is better for data storage than red, and why red is better than IR (blu-ray, DVD, CD, respectively).

Now riddle me this: Chip makers (Intel, Micron, IBM in the US, and a host of companies in Asia) are currently making chips which have their smallest feature sizes at 32nm. (That's the smallest for commercial parts, R&D is much smaller already). The catch: they're doing that predominantly with light at much higher wavelengths, ie 392nm. How do they pull that one off?

The answer: Very, very carefully, with very BIG and EXPENSIVE machines. As in $50million US or more per tool.

Not entirely, no, but even particles have wave nature. *The Earth has a wave nature, and has a wavelength. *You can't take wave nature out anymore, because matter has a wave nature. *You take a whole bunch of earths, launch them fast enough at an appropriate diffraction grating, and they will diffract, just like light. *Nothing can have zero wavelength, especially not light, but not having a wave nature doesn't make it a particle. 0 wavelength (I'm not going to say nm, because it could be any length measurement. In fact, I'm going to start using furlongs. Either that, or leagues.) is impossible for a photon, but it's also impossible for anything, even particles and all matter that they form.

Light has very little mass, but it DOES have mass. Imagine a spot of light the size of a nuclear explosion, now imagine a grain of sand. That huge spot of light has the mass of a grain of sand.

This isn't entirely accurate, but it gives you the right idea
