I've ordered a Melles Griot Hene tube with PSU via ebay.

Does this look like a good deal? I can't see what model it is from the picture, so I don't really know the specs. The ebay page says 5mW, but I don't know if this is correct.

I guess the power supply is for 110V. Anyone know if HeNe PSU's tend to support 220V, or should i get a transformer?

This is my first none-diode laser, and I'm very excited. I will update this thread with pictures (and probably many more questions) when i recieve it.

You need to ask the seller that. Since it's from the US I'm guessing it was setup for 110V. If that's the case then running 220V through it will ruin the power supply.

It looks to be the 3-5mW size. If it is older it may not put out that much.

There is not enough information from the eBay posting to tell anything about the PSU. When you get it, give us the make and model (and/or post a good picture showing the label and wiring).

Remember, you are going to be working with over one THOUSAND volts of electricity. BOTH the PSU AND the HeNe tube act as capacitors.

Aight. Just wondered if i should expect to find a 220/110 switch on the PSU. If there isn't one, I'll buy a transformer. Will this do the trick? No, I'll figure that one out myself.

Yeah, I know about the danger. Now, I'll use some time to read about how I should protect me from it.

You most probably won't find a "switch." However, many "brick type" PSU's have wiring for both 120V and 220V. You just hook up different wires to the mains in those cases. SOMETIMES in a "lab" style PSU, there will be a switch. In those cases the switch jumps different wires inside the case.

This is already a good price for a HeNe with a brick PSU. If you got a "lab" style PSU as well, you scored BIG TIME!

What's the difference? Is the brick style the gold one? and the lab style a silver one?

Yes. Most often there is a "brick" inside the labby enclosure. However, the enclosure allows for alternate wiring, indicator lights, and switches

I just received the PSU. The auction was really only for the head, and not the PSU. But the seller forgot to edit the item description, and when I asked him about it, he sent me a PSU for free. Good guy. :)

If you are thinking about the four metal rods: Two goes to the electrode (cathode), one is ground, and one is very short; maybe ground. I don't know. :thinking:

One is for holding a getter in place ( the one with the hoop on the end ), one ( two according to above post ) is cathode one is anode and the other one I can't make out clearly.The one I can't see well is probably ground ( going by the above post ).


EDIT: I see it's already answered above.

Nice pictures... I'm getting more and more excited about putting my tube in operation ASAP. Mine is the basic model with a single contact point (ring) at each end of the tube. I am tempted about making my own PS (as per the schematic I have from a mid 80's electronics mag) but these compact "brick" PS' seem cheap and much more convenient...
