6" hene - here's what I did with it

Amoung the other colorful hene tubes I got a week or so ago, I got this little 6" hene to use as a nightlite in our bedroom. Here is my attempt at that.

The Box is oak with the dc supply inside - feed goes to the ac/dc brick and wall

The base is 6" x 3" x 1.5"

The short side has an Off/On button mounted on the base (barely visible in end shot)

It is 6" high and the tube is mounted at a 45 degree angle.

The 4.5" piece that goes up, I drilled for the feed and the ballast reistor inside and then drilled a small access hole to attach to the top of the tube.

The long support is 4.5" and the smaller supports are each 1.5" so the virtual box holding it is 4.5" square.

If you take square root of 2 times 4.5" it gives you about 6.36". Just enough to fit the tube with a little give.

You can see the hole drilled at the bottom for the tube to slide into. Likewise there is one at the top for the beam to exit, both at 45 degress.

The one picture from the end wasn't shot straight on, so even though it looks a little crooked in the picture, it really isn't.

SO, give me some feedback! Good or bad, I'd like to hear it. I'm building about 5 more open exposed hene housings in oak in the near future for the bigger tubes. So I'd like input.

I LIKE the juxtaposition of the wood and the tube.

If I built another one, I would do it in oak as well.

The first one I did, was just an experiment.

However, it is nice enough that I have left it intact :)

Kind of square, pardon the pun. It needs some brass. Try to find some brass truck corners. Like these...

eBay sells all types, and they are cheap too. Maybe even add a small knife switch also. eBay has these cheap too.

Oak and brass go well together, and it will make it more esoteric.

Thanks, I like the idea of brass with it. Just not a fan of the trunk corners and knife switches. I may incorporate a brass rod to feed the power up in the bigger ones. Thanks

Thanks for the compliments. I'm a bit OCD on stuff but sometimes it gets me in trouble because at times I try to put too much in. I like the wood feel with the plasma. I don't see many things done with wood enclosures, which are more earthy. Most displays are plastic and metal. (Safer probably!!!)

VERY NICE- I had not considered anything except vertical. I have tubes and bricks to make four lamps- had though of doing two pairs but now seeing yours I may make all four different- the wood does look nice and I agree that brass and wood go very well together. At least two of mine will be made with clear plexiglass but wood will be used too.

I found a good source for wooden project boxes for future builds. I've used a few my self, and have a good collection going.

They are Acid Cigar boxes.

They are jointed, and have a high quality finish. I believe they are cedar. They also make many different sized boxes. I bought a few on eBay for around $4-$10. But I emailed a local cigar shop to ask if they had any, and the owner gave me 15 for a $10 donation to his charity.

They are expensive cigars believe it or not.

My girlfriend made me stop buying the boxes, LOL. I get OCD with boxes for some reason.

Those are great cigars. Never even thought about using the boxes for something before. I think I may even have a few tucked away somewhere. If not I know I have some other cedar cigar boxes somewhere. Time to dig though the closets again. :)

Acids are the only 'flavored' cigars I've ever really liked.

Nice cigar boxes and the tip about asking at shops is a great one. Glass shops often have small pieces of many types of glass and are usually cheap or free. I found a plumbers plunger at a thrift for a buck- the handle was 3/4" round clear plexiglass cut in half it will be used in two of my HeNs red lamps. My tubes are smaller.

Pix when I get the first pair done.
