It happens...I hooked up the polarity backwards on mine when I had it in a prototype board. Fortunately nothing was destroyed. I recently accidentally ran 9 volts into a driver that is only designed for 5 volts.. ;D It smelled so good but my diode didn't like it...it went "poof" quick..
