Yes you can --- It should be at least a 16x DVD r/w drive.
You buy it, tear it apart and carefully harvest the red diode (save the IR diode for another day ) Harvesting the diode takes time ---

HEY - Why not get a red LD from the group buy ??? It's cheaper and no hassle getting the diode out !!!

Seriously, Unless you have a trashed DVD machine, the GB is your best bet.
I've pushed one of mine to 300 mW using TEC cooling.

It needs to be a dvd burner at least 16x rewritable to be worth it, at the price you mentioned I'm pretty sure it doesn't really fit in these requirements.

PLEASE READ WHAT WE SAY ---  IT HAS TO BE A DVD WRITER DRIVE TO HAVE THE POWER TO BURN.  THis has to be about the 5th time it's been said to you here not to mention elswhere.  It takes power to burn a disk or anything else.

Before you buy a GB diode --  Be sure to read all the postings on how to build the laser, module and power supply -- Then read them all again and again.   YES -You NEED resistors, capacitor, module, heatsink etc as repeated over and over on this forum. YES you NEED all that stuff -- Please read what we say.
