Which torch to buy to Mod?

Hi,

I hope this is in the right place!
I need the best torch for modding my own SenKat diode into. What do you all suggest? I know that some say Dorcy, others Maglite, but I know some have built in drivers suitable for driving the diode direct. Bearing in mind I live in the UK, I can't just go to WalMart and buy one like you can, I have to order it from somewhere probably...

In an ideal world, I want an Aluminium nice flash light - not too big - not too small - that has it's own driver circuit, so I don't have to mess around making a circuit - one that take the Aixiz brass housing well - Preferably Lithium batts (if you would reccomend them)???? But I'm fine on AA's - +anything else that I should have/be aware of...

Thanks!

Dan :)

Well I know of another flashlight called the river rock but I don't know where to order it online. It has decent circuitry and has been proven to be almost as good as the dorcy. It takes 2 AAA. I believe you don't want to use lithiums as this will overpower these red diodes. Sorry if I can't answer more.

Do you know who manufactures it? (The river rock) as I can't seem to get a link to it?

Thanks,

Dan :)

If you do a search for the riverrock, you will find the links.

So, can someone please confirm: The Dorcy Mini has a driver circuit OK for driving a diode directly?

Also, can someone show me a link for the model that people are talking about, I can't for the life of me find a link in a UK shop. If that fails, please show me the link for the particular model in the US site.

That's tiny!!!!
I thought it would be more like a maglite....

Also, one last, last thing: I still can't find the riverrock torch, and I've searched here, eBay and google. :(

Anyone?....

Well I used the river rock because that was Kenom's next mod he was going to do. But he is in to process of moving and hasn't had a chance. I honestly do no think you need a walk through for the river rock. It's very simple to mod.

The hardest part was getting it apart. A minute in boiling water did it for me.
And I am using e2s with no probs.

Here is a link to the one I did.

Well try as you might, it is very hard to find a link on the web for the River Rock. This is the same thing though.

ah.... too hard to get in the UK!!!
I can get the dorcy 1 watt thingy from eBay USA - but it might just be cheaper to get a Maglite as they are literally EVERYWHERE in the UK.

So finally:
(please confirm!)

Dorcy LumiLED 1W CR123A Torch - No driver circuit needed
MagLite Mini AA - Need to build a driver circuit as connecting directly to the power is bad, right?

Do any of the Maglites have driver circuits? Perhaps the LED versions?????
BTW: I'm sure you're fed up with me pestering you all... so thanks for bearing with me :D

danielbriggs;
it seems that the dorcy should be just fine as-is;

its been suggested though, that you fit a 47uF 16v capacitor inline somewhere in the assembly...

But I'd defo need a circuit for the Maglite? or would a cap/res do fine?
I don't know if I can cram in DDL's current limit circuit???

with a maglight; as you saw in kipkay's instructable video;
the LD is hooked up DIRECTLY to the batt's. minimag's have no regulation built in. you can hook up a LD to the minimag directly, but its not going to last long at all... remember that.

about DDL's circuit; looking at my mag right now, i highly doubt you can make any type of regulation circuit small enough to fit inside of its body. if you wanted to try however; another member of the board here named "Rhith" has constructed a modified version of DDL's board, which is more compact, but still i doubt it would fit a minimag. stick with the dorcy. it looks cooler anyway ::)
