Take a look please

Okay guys I extracted a green diode with driver attached from one of those spencer gifts Green Kaleidoscope Laser Light things.

It is actually pretty powerful I was able to pop a balloon with it. Anyways I did some testing on the driver and it is putting out 290 mA @ 3.2 volts. My idea was to build an LM317 circuit and fine tune the current to see what this diode can handle. So I disconnected the driver from the green diode and I built the LM317 circuit. I then connected the laser diode but it does not work. I have tested LEDs in this circuit and they work just fine. I am using a 9 volt battery to power the LM317 circuit. On the output side I get a reading of around 7.5 volts with no load. Which is normal due to voltage drop of the Lm317. Also with no load I can get up to 1.4 amps so I really can't understand why this is not working. Here is a crude diagram of how I have everything wired:

I would appreciate some light shed on this matter if anyone has any ideas. Thank you all for your time.

Please meter the voltages on the three lm317 pins with respect to ground and post them here.

Thanks for the reply. Output pin is 7.54 volts. Adjust pin is 7.54 volts and the input pin is 8.11 volts.

Something is wrong on the load end. Please take a picture of what you are powering and how you wired it.

What is very odd to me is that I can connect a regular LED to this circuit and it works.:thinking: Here is a photo of my setup:

There's no load in that photo. Please take a picture of what you are powering (the load) and how you wired it.

There is a load. Where you see the Red and Black wires labeled LD+ and LD- I have my diode connected and I am 100% sure it's not wired with reverse polarity.

Last time I ask, then I'm leaving. Please take a picture of your load. Measure the voltage at the load, while you're at it.

Why are most people here so rude? A lot of members act like just because they know more than someone that makes them better and can come across like arrogant and all persnickety. I am sure you can picture it in your head. I am tired of the abuse here. It's not direct but it's there. Just like another member said that my username and avatar would not instill confidence in people here. I am a 31 year old father of 3 with a house and a wife. I work full time, and have many things to show for it. I'm tired of getting treated like I am 15 year old. I feel like I need to walk on eggshells when I ask for help. I miss the days of SenKat and Kenom. That is all.

It could be argued that the quoted post is rude. It's obvious to me that there is a load connected to the wires indicated in the picture.

Yet you chose to point out the obvious instead of what was asked.

Well if it was so obvious then why does someone with obvious greater knowledge need a picture of it? it was pretty straight forward to be honest. Asking for a picture of it was what made me feel inferior do you understand?

Well, I certainly don't know as much about this as Cyparagon does, but one thing that came to mind is how the load is connected. Maybe you have alligator clips connected to the diode leads. I'm not saying you do, but if you did, that could be a problem.

Maybe cyp wanted a picture of the whole setup to quickly identify a problem. You shouldn't feel inferior. After all, if I, with little knowledge of electronics, can think of 1 reason to see all of it, what could an expert find?

You don't think it's rude to ask for help, then refuse to follow basic troubleshooting instructions when asked nicely?

The voltages you measured earlier indicate an open load. I'm not asking for a picture of your load to piss you off, I'm asking for a picture of the load because the measurements say there is something wrong with the load.

NOW, do you want to cooperate, or do you want to whine and play the victim?

I have to say that was pretty funny. I figured it out it was a dumb rookie mistake. The alligator clip I was using had a cold solder joint. Sorry to waste your time.

No question is a dumb question. A teacher told me this and I wish everyone felt that way. I rarely ask question here but want to everyday. I have a curiosity that spirals out of control and could ask questions for days it's my way of connecting with others with my same interest. I want to learn what others know and sometimes can only by asking but fear of being told "use search bar" stops me eveytime. I want to know so many things so I just read and then Google it hoping for a explanation I can understand. There are some super incredible people here with knowledge that is immeasurable but their people skills are missing.
P.S. your user name and avatar are OK by me I actually like them.
