A DDL driver with a large TO-220 LM317 at 200mA, modified to fit into an Aixiz housing. I needed three resistors to get the exact value I wanted. The black rectangle is a cap. The laser diode itself is an infra red emitting 122mW.

Very compact indeed, though sawing pieces of components off is a bit of cheating ;)

Then again, you can also get the lm317 in a sot-223 or to-263 housing which are rated at up to 1 amp and would probably fit without any brute force...

I had these lying around, and I don't even think my cheap reseller has these components

I think that's a first, putting a DDL circuit in an Aixiz module! I remember when I had trouble fitting a DDL circuit in an MXDL... ;D

Shame was I didn't have a small capacitor and it was an old SenKat red so not as powerful as this one, nice job by the way ;)

Yeah, you got to measure how much space you actually have sometimes.

Also, keep an eye on the thermal side of things when doing builds like these. In a typical 2xCR123A powering a red diode situation, the regulator dissappates about as much heat as the laser diode.

These regulators do work well beyond 100 degrees C, so it isnt usually that big a deal, but temperatures can shoot up quickly in such a small enclosed space. The LM317 will save itself by lowering current though, so that should be noticeable if it becomes problematic.

Temperature is not a big problem. At 200mA, and closed aixiz, the LM327 becomes about 40 degrees after only 4 minutes. With this kind of duty-cycle, I'm happy. When powering a 20x red at 420ma, that would be another story (and I wouldn't recommend it)
