tatman had this idea a while back...
I was recently asked by a member to do this mod for him, so I decided to take a few pictures if anyone wants to see how...

1.jpg

This is just a picture of the adjustable RPL tail cap, which is the best cap to have, but it's kind of a hassle to carry a little screw driver. Also, it will get scratched up in time.

2.jpg

I used a small threaded knob. The key to the mod, is the custom machined bolt that you see here. The plastic washer is used at the finish...

3.jpg

This must be a perfect, tight fit for the slot on the adjuster, and a perfect thickness to allow it to turn. (but also, not loose either) This 'bolt/screwdriver', will be installed on the inside of the cap. Notice the small modified washer there as well...

4.jpg

These 'thin' washers are used to compensate for the thickness of the custom 'thin' bolt head/screwdriver tip that is now inside the cap.

5.jpg

After putting on the plastic washer, I used some medium strength thread lock to install the knob.

Finished if off by drilling some 'divots' into the knob and cap. Then filling the divots with white paint. One dot marks the 'off' position, and the other dot marks position number '4'. Which is normally the optimum position. No other dots are really needed, because it is easy to count the 'clicks'. But I figured that these two positions were good to mark...

Hope you like it! ;)
Jay

Nice mod :) That's exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of doing to my RPLs.

I don't have the proper tools at the moment, but when I do I'll be doing something like this ;)

It shouldn't really affect the RPL warrenty, because it has nothing to do with the business end of the laser...just makes the switch easy to turn on and off...

bump :)

I was thinking about this lately, since I find the screwdriver really annoying. Would you be interested in selling all the parts in like a little kit? Since RPL tail caps are all the same, you could bundle all the bits, like the washers, custom bolt, knob; everything you need, then sell them as a little 'RPL Tail Cap mods'.

Or if not, think you could whip up a little kit for me? ;D

EDIT: Actually, scratch that. I can't get the screws undone in the tail cap anyway. What did they do, use a power drill and a vice? lol. I'll leave it lest I strip them.

Hey Jayrob, any possibilities on machining an RPL tailcap that would accept input from a dc adaptor?

Also, whats in that tailcap, just a variable resistor?

It's one of those tight tolerance mods that I would need the cap for. I don't think a kit would work out...

Yep! It's just a variable resistor! That thick brass contact is just a spacer for battery contact.

I'm sure it would be pretty easy to set up a DC adapter using a battery 'blank' or something...

Correction - I believe the pot is being used together with a small circuit on the board...

I hate to ask but whats that mod cost if i wanted it

Not trying to sell this mod... Just wanted to show it because it is a nice mod.

He basically talked me into it! He was willing to make it worth my time spent. - $40 bucks plus shipping back. (and he had to send me his RPL cap first)

But I used my last knob and brass bolt for this. So I would have to go and buy a knob with a similar size and type of bolt mount...
