The consensus is that any 1 watt led flashlight will probably work. The only additional item that might be needed is a resistor.

Have you tried the DX flashlights? Some of these are priced VERY competitively and house some very nice and useful circuits. ;)

No I haven't had a look at DealExtreme.. yet. :)
Do we have a list of recommended LED units anywhere?
I'm unable to determine what will work unless it's clearly labeled 1 watt.
So much information, so little time.

Just look for something with a drive circuit... then it can be later modified or replaced ;)

At this point I'm leaning toward the MXDL 5W Lumileds CR123A 6V Flashlight for a couple of reasons.
I may be off so correct me if I missed something...
First, there's a tutorial which is necessary for noobs like me.
Secondly, the power of 2 x CR123A 3.0V batteries will last longer and possibly be cheaper to replace.
And finally, who wants to pay $5 more for a case?

There are alo of mini dorcys...are all of them fine for use?

And is this better than the minimag?

Will the LD burn out, like a mag?

The diode will probably burn out in a Mini Dorcy if you don't add an extra resistor, but it does have a regulator circuit so it shouldn't burn out quite as quickly as in a MiniMag.

what value resistor should be used, i don't see how that would be that much harder to add. and also when soldering the diode do you solder it to where teh led was previously connected or where the yellow wire and pin thing is soldered. it is kind of hard to tell from the video/.

i thought that a cap should be used on the mini dorcy, not a resistor? It already has a resistor, just needs a cap for added security. Also, how do you get the plastic lense off the dorcys head part? I cant seem to push it out either way, any insite?

Ok i did it without adding a resistor or anything, but I just need thermal epoxy and its complete. Tested it, works good. What burns/melts the best. i tryed plastic with sharpie on it and it melts a hole after about 10-15 seconds or so. Im trying to make sure I dont leave it on to long.

Well i believe i just burnt this diode, it still works its just really dim. It still gets hot and all, but I took it apart again and forgot to check the positive pin and it was close to the case and it touched. Damn I got one more try to see if this works.

My eyes are not what they used to be and I cannot see the connections we are to cut for electrical isolation. Can you or anyone else please post a sketch or close-up photo indicating the exact positions? I would appreciate it. Thank you!
