i think you killed it by overvoltage/current. I think 3.2V @ 300ma is to much for a diode without TEC cooling. Sorry man :-/

Actually 300ma isn't that bad. Shouldn't have killed it cause of that.

But with 3.2 volts I would bet there was much more than 300ma's going to the diode. I am powering SenKat's diode with 270ma's and the voltage is almost 2.9 volts. .3 volts will make a big difference. Also measuring current with a meter will be deceiving. Once everything is soldered up there can be a substantial increase in current. This is why I always recommend using a 1 ohm resister soldered in series with the circuit, and measuring the voltage across the resistor to get the current reading. It is much more accurate IMO than using a meter to measure current.

My first LD died @ much lower voltage and current. driver is OK. so I cant understand what was wrong. :-/ bad luck I cannot get any more LDs coz of their price :'(. and I should save some cash for DMM, this one sucks

guys, is there any use for DVD reader LD or DVD burner IR LD? got couple of these left :-?

if they are high powered you can still use them for burning but most people wouldnt bother because you cant see ir so there is no way of knowing when its shooting you in the eyes and blinding you.

my first ld was fried. pulled it from a $40 dvd burner that i only thought was broken..
after that i decided to go with some el-cheapo lds. geareb on ebay sells 8x lds in 5 packs for $59usd shipped (takes about 2 weeks +$20 to get it in 2-3 days, money orders take forever). theyre good cheap diodes to practice with. they will pop balloons and cut through electrical tape. so far after coming to this forum the life of my diode is up 300% at least. i fried the first one on day 1 by hooking it up to a 9v for a split second to figure out the terminals :) i have yet to fry any of my new ones and was able to get it to cut through black tape from 1cm away without any colliminating/focusing

Just a word to the wise. Geareb on ebay is the one that stiffed Senkat for over $4000 worth of diodes. So I'd be weary on dealing with him. As a matter of fact I'd not buy a diode from the guy if he paid me to buy from him. It's just a integrity kind of thing. IF YOUR GONNA F*CK A FRIEND OF MINE OVER, YOUR GONNA NEED TO GROW EYES ALL OVER YOUR ASS!

strange. i never had any problems with him. it took 2 weeks to mail the money order. a month for it to be processed for some odd reason. then i sent another $20 with a friends paypal for express shipping and i would have received my diodes a couple days after that, but fedex got lazy and didnt get around to me on friday..
i thought someone else ripped off greg. i remember asking if that was the same guy. i thought he said it was someone else.

pretty sure it was gaerb. the only reason you havn't had problems is your on ebay and your protected from that there. he doesn't want to get negative feedback. if it's him.

About this picture...

Laser_Dot_2nd_diode_A.jpg

The dots and waves of bright and dark spots on this image, those are not necessairly dust spots. they are actually the waves of light creating disturbances with each other. what happens is there is some sort of impurity in the glass itself on the laser diode, be it a microscopic air bubble or what have you, it is blocking light at that spot. It will actually create destructive light interference. like this...

twoslitswithoneand%20screen.jpg

If you look at the bright spots, thats where the waves' phase is equal to (lambda); (2*lambda); (3*lambda); etc.... you will see really bright spots.
but if the phase is (lambda)/2 ; (3 lambda)/2 ; etc, the waves will be 180* out of phase and cancel each other out, creating the lack or light, or the dark spots.

You can look at Newton's Rings experiment for more information.

just some food for your mind :)

see now I'd disagree that those spots arent' dust. Iv'e never seen a red laser I've made do that unless it has some kind of particles on the diode lens or the lens itself.

i wasnt disagreeing with you Kenom, just adding more possibilities and adding scientific explainations ::). if he got a defective or maybe micro-scratched lens inside the diode itself, it will create that interference. its like putting a stick into a stream and watching the water flow around it coming back into itself on the other side.
