Many times small flashlights are used for hosts, but does anybody ever use cheap ledlights or cheap ebaysers to gut and put nice blu-rays in?
In my opinion, gutting out cheap lasers may be a nicer look than a flashlight. It will cost a little more, but with the new tiny drivers coming out, as long as the AixiZ module fits in the old case, then you should be good! Oh, also the batteriess may need changing out

Has anybody tried this?

Putting a BR into an old pen is possible. Several here have done it but the driver board needs to be rebuilt for the ~5 volt requirement. Tedious but rewarding in the end ;D

Yes that would be rewarding!!

Mike, I found a pretty long thread about somebody doing this (with a blu-ray, not sure which one). In that thread I read something about a boost driver, what is that? Is that how you would have to modify the driver to provide enough voltage?

Read what I've done. There's room for 2 AAA LiIon cells to provide ~7 volts.
Build a simple driver in there and WOW. I'm using an LDO CV regulator.

A boost drive boosts the voltage of the source to what voltage you need. For instance the flexdrive sold by Dr. Lava in the BST section can be used to power a Blu-Ray off of two AAA batteries.

hmm, I don't think the circuit is too complicated for me (i'm not great at electronics, but I think I get this component). How much room do you have on the inside for the actual driver? Will I need to buy a chip to mount the circuit on in order to have room?

looks like I might have found myself a new project!

edit: is that a NewWish host?

AH I can't decide which way to go!
It's either buy a lava boost driver for 22 dollars and figure out how to shove it all in a ledlight or make a cheaper circuit using an LDO CV regulator and LiIon cells.

however I read that using the higher voltage LiIon cells will generate more heat, creating a shorter duty cycle. How detrimental is this to the duty cycle? I probably won't use this laser for constant on uses...

yes, everybody seems to be recommending the Lava driver to me. I guess that's what I'll have to do! as soon as I get money lol

Lets see --- 7.5 volts input - 5 volts regulated = 2.5 volt drop.
2.5 volts x 130 mA = 0.325 watts regulator disapation. Not too bad for a TO92 device. The series resistor will disapate about 0.065 watts roughly.
But that's just my design...

To fit a lavadrive in a Leadlight just shave a little bit off the sides without hitting any components. There is a thread here somewhere showing how to build a laser into a Leadlight using a lavadrive.

The cheapest Leadlights you will find will be around $50, so that's not exactly cheap!
