Re: Open Can with TEC (20' Match Light Video pg. 6

I discovered that an Aixis module fits inside of a 3/8" air hose coupler with some filing on the inside with a rat tail file.  I also used one for my Dorcy mini.

That's pretty inventive roSSco... Nice one.

I did a little more testing on this open can diode using the Ice Box. I went back to the AixiZ acrylic lens as well. (I have the glass lens in my MXDL 300) http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1199846835/75
With the acrylic lens, I set the current to the LD at 452mA and measured a peak of 260mW and it stayed around 258mW. Now, when you compare the readings that I got at 416mA, which were 246.9mW peak and it stayed in the 240s, I think that it is better to leave it at 416mA. Because the gain in power is only about 12 or 13mW when I turned up the current by 36mA.

So, all in all, just verifying that Gazoo's recommendation to stay around 400mA seems to be the 'sweet spot' for these open can diodes. As long as you have TEC, or a good heatsink. Good advice Gazoo!

I think so too. We know using a glass lens we can get 250mw's running it at 350ma's. And 300mw's running at 416ma's. It seems as though the knee starts somewhere around 450ma's according to Hemlock Mike's graph. So I am comfortable running the open can at ~400ma's. I am very happy we can get anything over 200mw's for so cheap.. ;D

hey gazoo, what should be the minimum and max. voltage and minimum and max. current of 20x DVD burner open can? i need a reference to write down , thanks.

I don't go by voltage anymore unless I am curious. I am more interested in the current. The diode should start to lase with 55ma's applied to it. The maximum current I would use is 400ma's, but I am a bit more comfortable with 350ma's. Running with 350ma's the voltage across the diode should be appx. 2.8 volts.

Hey, since we have been running the open can MXDL builds at 420mA's (heatsinked) for a while now, I went ahead and turned up the Ice Box a little. Since it has TEC with a fan:

Pioneer 112D - 450mA's
Peltier - 552mA's (keeps it nice and cool)
The fan is regulated to 5 volts and is drawing 192mA's
Putting out a peak of 269.4mW's!
I had an AixiZ acrylic lens in there, but I changed it out to a Meredith acrylic lens.
This thing can be left on I think! It stays steady at 263mW's. I've only left it on for a couple of minutes at a time, but it stays cool.
The burning capability at this power using a Meredith acrylic lens, is unbelievable!

Pretty impressive.
So when are you going to use a glass lens? ;D

Ahh! I did test it with a Meredith glass lens here:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1197272621/96#100
Which is totally awesome. I still like the burning capabilities of the acrylic lens better for reds though. Don't get me wrong, the Meredith glass lens is great too!

I like the Meredith glass lens in a blu-ray for sure! You saw that...

Oh yeah, I guess I should have checked the thread, :-[ I read it a long time ago so I don't remember much. (it was like a month ago) ;D

Hey chido, cool new avatar! Lets hear about the laser build that you used for the video...

Re: Open Can with TEC (20' Match Light Video pg. 6

Thanks, and it's not exactly a build yet. The short open can diode I sent to DL for testing arrived a couple of days ago and I just couldn't resist myself so I quickly put a driver together, soldered a capacitor with two wires to the diode's legs and fired it up.
Then I thought I could make an avatar. (finally) ;D
I set the pot at 200mA only because the aixiz module isn't heatsinked and I don't want to kill this diode since it's the only one I know the power off. I don't plan on using this anymore until I get something to put it in and a heatsink for the aixiz module. At 200mA it's putting out around 100mW according to DL's graph. So yeah, not so powerful at the moment. :p

Re: Open Can with TEC (20' Match Light Video pg. 6

That's an interesting graph. It shows that the 'short' open can diodes are not the same as the 'long' open cans.

But the most interesting part to me, is the comparison between the acrylic lens vs the glass lens.

I'm sure that it is not the Meredith glass lens, but probably the AixiZ glass lens.

This is in line with the comparisons that I have found with the AixiZ glass lenses. As you know, I have found much more of a difference in the Meredith glass lenses!

Yup, you're right. DL said he tested my diode with an aixiz glass lens.

This graph confirms what I have found with my comparisons between the AixiZ acrylic lenses (plastic cut away) vs the AixiZ glass lenses. Not much difference in power. The Meredith glass lens on the other hand, gives about 20% more power with the open can reds, and about 30% more with the blu-rays. (compared with Meredith acrylic lenses)

For those who have not seen this (because I'm sure you have already seen this chido),
The Meredith glass lens is an single element lens, but the main difference, is it's design. It is a 'short focus' lens. Meaning that it must be mounted very close to the LD, in order to get focus. See this diagram:
