Thing is, if the heatsink is 26mm in diameter anyway then that's already quite a large mass. Using the copper tape will mean there is some dissipation to the host (even if not a huge amount) so it'd, surely, just mean slightly longer cooldown times.

Don't discount the p60 drop-in yet. Remember, p60 is for a portable light. You want infinite duty cycle? get a labby.

I've never used the copper tape, but I've used foil with noticeable results, even with multiple layers (and hence, multiple air-metal junctions), on some LED drop-ins. Before and after was noticeable with my hands. (LED drop-in was a k-bin MC-E)

Now, keep in mind, these are LEDs. I haven't tried it with my laser because:
1: the heatsink doesn't get hot.
2: I had it made specifically for the L2, not the surefire or ____fire.

I think as far as filling the gap goes, copper foil > aluminum foil > copper tape.

I should add that right now, my MC-E drop-in is in the ultrafire C1 with some Al foil, and you can barely pull that drop-in out. You have to go at it by prying it up bit by bit. Hopefully that's enough metal-on-metal contact to have better thermal conductivity than when it was just floating around in the drop-in pocket.
