Non-Working Coherent FAP 800 Unit?

Hey everyone -

I got my 30W 808nm Coherent FAP LD array in the mail today. However, it is DOA, so I am looking for a way to open it up so I can replace the bar array (I have one to spare).

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks - let me know!

EDIT: Alright, got it open.

Now, I removed the old, broken diode array (which I now suspect wasn't broken -.-, but it is now) and replaced it with my new one that I know is in working order. However, upon installation of the new array, I am still getting no output through the fiber. I checked alignment and it should be "good enough" to get some light through the fiber coupling, but I am literally getting ZERO emitted radiation from the nose.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this? I'm thinking that the fiber has to be broken somewhere along the line? I mean, come on, zero radiation getting into the fiber? Anyway, I'm looking forward to help.

Re: Opening Up Coherent FAP

Sent you a message....I'll see if I can find the pictures of the one FAP that I got open. The lid was very easy to get off. With another that I attempted I was not able to get it apart. Seems that the lid is in some way welded to the top.

Good luck and hopefully I can find the pictures if they may be of any help:beer:

Something else came to mind when I read the title

The point where the individual fibers align with the emitters
should radiate/emit some of the IR into the box cavity.
Use an IR camera to see it.
If the Fibers do not radiate/emit any IR then the Fibers are
not aligned with the bar emitters.

I have a FAP 40 with an optical sensor on the side that
detects that radiated IR emission to be used as a monitor.

The diode is so bright that I can hardly tell what's emitting light and what's absorbing light. I may try turning down the laser so I can see if the fibers are actually absorbing the IR.

I use the camera on my phone to see IR. It's not the best but it works, perhaps that will help you zero in on the problem. Turn down the laser as much as possible and hold the camera at distance, that may take some of the glare out.

Yep, your alignment will have to be a bit better than "good" enough. Normally, the fiber is installed and aligned after the chip is installed. You will find there is a veryyyy fine line between alignment and just scattering some IR all over.
