My quest for free parts!

I have decided to stop buying parts from retailers and harvest them out of old useless electronics.

My first will be an external power supply to a broken cannon printer. I posted this in troop321's topic but decided to make my own thread and include all of my harvests'.

I did some searching and found an old canon printer external power supply.

I got a bevy of useful components out of this.

120uf 400v capacitor
(2) 330uf 25v capacitor
47uf 35v capacitor
47uf 16v capacitor
100uf 10v capacitor
10uf 50v capacitor
1 uf 50 v capacitor
(2) potentiometers
LM317T
(3) switches
(14) 10ohm 1/4 watt resistors
(5) silicone diodes
Green LED
Red LED
(2) White LED
(3) Unknown item A
(8) Unknown item B
Unknown item C

WOW I NEED TO HOLD THE CAMERA STEADY!

I cannot figure out what these are. Any ideas?

Can't figure this one out either. Cinda looks like a capacitor but has no markings on it.



I will take apart the printer soon and see what I can find in there!

they are basic transistors. Probably no use whatsoever. (unless you read the markings on their flat face and find out what sort)

I find a good old hot air gun really useful for salvaging parts from boards, you just put the board in a vice or some other stable holder, grab the component that you want to remove with some pliers and pull gently while you heat the other side of the board with the hot air gun until the solder melts and the part comes right out of the board. you can do this with parts that have many legs too

hmm yeah but then you risk melting something you want... : like fingers.
my soldering iron (butane) has a hot air blower, i'll have to try that.

ive been doing the same thing for years and have had great success getting nifty parts for projects. i canniabalize EVERYTHING for parts!

RS sells a great de-soldering tool. i think is @ $8 or so, the blue spring-loaded plunger looking one. it works great.

The first are transistors, the second are varistors and the last is some kind inductor i think

i like cannibalising!
for "regular" parts, i buy them, though. even a small electronic circuit takes hours for me, including research on the actual circuit, eprhaps making an etched board, soldering etc. so i buy the parts, its only a few $/€ anyway. but for switches, especially tiny ones, old devices are great! i simply cant find that tiny switches and pots as found in cd/dvd drives! oh, no better option to find high voltage capacitors than in psus and old flashes, i think!
parts from old laserprinters, the optical stuff, are nice too. polygon-mirrors, surfacemirrors, lenses, fibers, and even an actual (useless) laser!

I just harvested a whole computer, monitor, motherboard, power supply, cd drive, everything. you can imagine everything i pulled out, but it doesnt do me any good i dont know how to read all the voltage regulators or how to tell anything about the resistors. capacitors are easy though. is there a good site i can go look up all the info? thanks
