How did this guy mod his laser to show in light? It could be a dumb prank, but even if so, is there any way to increase the beam visibility? Note: I don't have the one in the video, but I might be getting this one.

The visibility of the beam, depend mainly from smoke / dust / particles / dirt suspended in the air, not from the beam itself

Only efficent ways for make a beam more visible, are:

fill air with anything that reflect the light (as said, smoke, dust, fog, dirt, so on), or

use a more powerful emitterm (so the beam, having a lot more intensity, is more visible also in reduced air contamination environment, cause the few particles that reflect it, reflects anyway much more light)

I really don't think nor know, actually, any other really working way for acquire this goal, sorry.

The guy in the video has filled the room with smoke, you can't "mod" it to be that bright.

The color of the laser has a lot to do with it as well. The green spectrum (555nm exactly IIRC) is the PEAK wavelength of the human eye. This does differ slightly from person to person but it is the easiest color for us to see.

Yeah. There is nothing special about this guy's laser. He's just got a bit of smoke in the room.. also, it looks like night and the room isn't very brightly lit either.
If you get that green one you linked too, I would go with at least 50mW. But, preferably 100mW so you can do real burning with it:
100mW 532nm Fat Beam Green Laser (Black) $31.09 - Free Shipping
or, go with a seller that will stand behind the claimed output:
50mW pocket Green laser torch£>5~120mw green laser pointer£>Laser&lighting products£>www.0-like.com

Having the beam firing towards you makes it easier to see as well, so if you want some cool pictures, photograph while facing the laser source (watch your eyes though).

Smoke? where do you see smoke? If a beam passes through smoke you can see the different thickness of the smoke. And the beam never breaks in the room when he waves it around. the room would have to completly filled with smoke to give the bright laser effect. SHOW ME THE SMOKEY. I would like to know what slight modifications he did to the laser he said he did.

Light several sticks of insence. Add a fan to the room to mix the smoke in the room well. VOILA! "Smooth smoke" that does not display any "thick" spots.

There are "tricks" to make lighting matches easier too ;)

@tymtravler: I guarantee you it's smoke.. that's just how these things work. You can't see a laser beam at all unless there is some sort of matter in the air for it to reflect from. At very short wavelengths (blu-rays for example) even the molecules of the air itself will reflect the light. Reflection from air molecules is called Rayleigh scattering and is the reason the sky is blue. Light reflected from the oceans is scattered by the molecules in the air since blue wavelengths are short enough to allow it. Given all this, a laser beam would be invisible in outer space even if it were 1TW or 1PW or even more than that.

Like daguin said, smoke does not always have variation in it's thickness. It is quite possible to have a very uniform smokiness throughout a room.

Burn something VERY toxic like think plastic or black rubber. That way you get extra dense smoke :D! (And some physical problems like lung cancer...but at least it'll improve the beam!!)

I am SO HUMBLED by the great knowledge of the forum. WOW can you imagine the laser show in LA with all the smog?
Thanks

Filthy habit. Just give it up; think of all the lasers you can buy with the money you save :D

Yeah I hate it but its my last vice. I need to do something to shorten my life. Maybe I should start drinking a 5th of Southern Discomfort, downing 20 beers, smoking $100 worth of crack and smoking 25 joints a day again. Aaaah the good old days.

Only 20 beers, remember 24 beers to a case, 24 hours in a day do the math. Also 20 cigs to a pack, 24 hours in a day, that leaves you 4 hours so in that time you go to the frig, get a  and drink it, go to the :toilet: and then play with lasers. nuff said.:D,

In our physics lab, there is a certain "Smoke in a can" that we have, you spray it around, it fogs up the room, but is hardly visible to the eye (let alone on camera). Then you shine your laz0rs about and watch in amazement as the beam becomes visible!!

A much cheaper alternative would be a fog machine, smoking "cigs" in your "crib", or as someone above me said: Shining the laser towards the camera (Make sure NOT to shine it in your eye, or into the camera for obvious reasons).

Regards,

Amk

P.S. I'm back!
