Ok, I am in high school, can't know any less about lasers, and now I have to come up with a project. I tried looking around the forum for somewhere to start, but now I'm even more dissoriented. I need someone to point me to an easy project my friend and I could work on.

I'm doing this in my physics class, so it doesn't have to be too difficult. I was thinking about doing the burning laser with the dvd diode, but wondering if it would be worth it to learn how to make a driver or if there's a more simple way to keep it from dieing quickly.

Any help would be appreciated! ;D

Ok, thanks for the help.  I'll be sure to go over it when I have the chance.

For an easy project I suggest you do the dorcy mod, all you have to do is add a resistor and a capacitor, you don't need to make the entire driver since it's already built in the flashlight, here's the long ass thread: ;D

And look in the tutorials section, Kenom made a video walkthrough: (he posted that vid in his thread above, but it's all the way in the back of the thread)

I'm looking for a nice cheap diode now. I was looking at the lite on at newegg which is the cheapest right now, and was wondering if I should get that one? (LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model DH-20A4P-04 - OEM blah blah blah)
I have never extracted a dvd diode before, and don't want to buy one where when I try to get it out of the burner, I destroy it. Links to cheap diodes ($20-$30) that would be good for me would be appreciated.

You can get a diode pre-installed in an aixiz module here for 27 bucks only!!!! Here's a graph showing its performance. :)

That's why I use the links above. I now ask, should I try harvesting a 20x or stay with stoneteks 16x $20 diode? I think I may go with that one if no one has any suggestions

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't read all the other posts. :-[ ;D
Don't get a lite on drive, those have a short open can diode which is not as strong as a long open can, look at this thread for a 20x Sony drive from which you can harvest a long open can diode really easy. :)

I will get that one as a second choice, but if there's nothing wrong with the 16x at santek, theirs is $20 with free shipping I think. I read the post above and another one that says they might have a "bad batch"? Though I think they have that taken care of, right?

That was weeks ago, now they got diodes that appear to be more powerful then the good ones were. Look here.

Look at the graph, of course it's a 16x, it even seems to be more powerful than my 18x short open can diode.
