Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

By what factor would you expect the output to increase?
I didn't think it would be very much, just a percent or so in the window, I thought any light that is wasted inside the can would be at such an angle that it would miss the lens anyway.

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

ya know I have no idea since it's only a theory and has no practical knowledge to go with it. I seem to recall that the glass on the diode itself acts like a mirrored surface like on typical tube lasers. Reflecting the light until it reaches a certain level of power where it then can escape the can. Now that doesn't make much sense to me considering thtat the open cans don't need this to lase well. so if you see an increase it's going to be marginal.

I thought the window was just to protect the LD, and the end facets of the laseing media made up the optical cavity.
So yeah, prob. just a percent or two. But hey! every bit helps.

see now your probably right. it's in the end of the medium there. I donno. haven't gotten that far into the technical stuff yet.

I wonder if the window is mirrored on the outside of the can to prevent the beam from bouncing back into the emitter and overloading it?

Prob. not as they would have to cut it at a very specific angle (Brewsters angle or something like that)
and that would cost $

Sorry, getting more than a bit OT here.

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

Just by the fact the the index of refraction is different between two mediums, there will ALWAYS be light reflected directly back.  This applies on both sides of the lens, some light will reflect off of the lens and will stay in the can, and then some more will reflect off of the interface with the air.  I don't know the index of refraction for the lens on the can, but the percent reflection is easy to calculate, I just have to get home and check some notes from a class I took.

But if we could put this stuff on it though.... http://physorg.com/news91978273.html (sorry, can't post a link, anyone want to fix it?)

I doubt that was the problem, though :( I have had some that were in CROOKED before I learned the vise trick...I was using lat edged screwdrivers and a hammer - don't ask LOL !!
A HAMMER???? That's LD cruelty man!!!!!!!!! The poor little diode. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

well some people have got to 250mw, but that is prolly the absolute MAX!! 80mw to 170mw seems alot more reasonable, it depends on the diode, and how much you feed it! LOL ;D ;D

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

Whoa so much controversy over fitting the LD in the axiz. I just used Senkat's method but I didnt have a vice. So I place the diode and axiz "sandwich" on a flat surface. I then put a book on top of the whole thing. Then used a hammer to set it in place. If you do this though, check every so often the position of the LD.

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

So... I can't even get to this step because the diode that comes in the housing won't come out.

If I assume correctly, I would remove the lens and spring and push into the diode from the front end to pop it out right? After unscrewing the back of the module of course.

A vice makes it easy to take it out like this .....

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

RE the picture on my previous post, I use a piece of tube as the threads that hold the aixiz module together are not good and I damaged one once but you can do it with the module in one piece (minus lens and spring). If you have not got a vice still use the dowel and tap it with a light hammer.

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

Well, I finally got the new diodes mounted (they are rated at 250mW @ 3.2V) and sadly... they won't do anything... Won't light matches... won't burn tape... nothing... how would I really know if that was the output of the laser?
