I just received three flashlights from DX which I plan to convert to lasers as soon as i get the GB red LD's.

Daedel's MXDL DIY: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171

MXDL Elly: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1120

Lumiled: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3329

Initial inspection / test's show that the Lumiled flashlight has a lot of potential. It uses 1 x CR123 and as a flashlight it is really nice. The driver is based on a Philips :) TEA1208T high efficiency DC-DC converter - datasheet found here:

http://www.datasheetcatalog.com/datasheets_pdf/T/E/A/1/TEA1208T.shtml

A quick inspection of the circuit shows it is operating in up conversion mode. The circuit appears to be very good quality and stable. The current can be adjusted as the circuit has a current limiting pot. It should be relatively easily modified.

I have not really played around with it yet - I expect to get some time over the weekend to do so and I'll keep u guys posted.

PS. It went out of stock as soon as I bought it...I should have bought a few of them. ;D:)

DX's description is a mistake... It takes 1 x CR123 and I haven't tested it but I'm 99% sure it can take a rechargeable RCR123 (3.6V).

Don't try that for a burner really. I have one of these AA powered 'elly' lights, and the driver in them is underpowered and unstable. Output depends on battery voltage, and, worse, when you try to buffer it in a capacitor it just fails.

This one works really well with plenty of space. It's a pretty big flashlight, easy to fit a driver in, and mechanically quite sturdy as well. The LED inside isn't half bad either, a 3 watts luxeon star with a bit of a bluish tint.

Since I ordered the elly I've found some threads on CPF:

The ones we can buy now have a crappy cheaper boost circuit than a previous version of this FL.

I actually like the look of it and plan to use a 3.6v 14500 battery (which is the same size as an AA) with some circuit modification...

If this does not perform I will use my own circuit which I am in the process of designing from scratch which will:

A) Deliver required current for the burners and/or
B) Deliver the voltage for the B'Rays.

But for now I will focus on gettin the Lumiled to peak.
