is there a way to take a 16x cd burner diode and stick it in a module, add a driver, and have TTL

YES -- For Sure but what driver circuit are you using. TTL is the easiest because it is a 1/0 type circuit.

Funnily enough I have just posted this drawing on another thread...

Use an opto isolator and an NPN transistor, the circuit shown was to drive a DX green but the connection is the same whatever the drive circuit...

I'm not sure of the "frequency response" of my driver, meaning I can't give the start up and turn off times as the output cap (or possibly other components) may "buffer" any frequency modulation. I'd be interested to see if anyone has tried and to what frequency my driver will work for modulation.

And, nice circuit Rog! Looks like it would be cool to use, especially for that other post you put it in!
