Re: Starting tonight, 13 Sept - new GB for 16xdiod

thank you, most helpful.
what exactly does the LM317 do? any substitutes for it?
sorry if i sound ignorant

Re: Starting tonight, 13 Sept - new GB for 16xdiod

The LM 317 is a voltage regulator, and (afaik!!) any will do as long as you do not exceed the voltage/current that is bad for your diode.
Voltage regulator means, regardless of the input voltage, you always have the same output voltage.

Well, as it happens, I was in town today, passing by the electronics store, and coincidentally, I got in and, how come!, found myself buying two LM317s! :)

At 60ct each, no real pain, but worth the diode life!!!

Well, off to soldering!

Yes, BUT let's remember we are using the 317 as a current regulator. BTW, you got a good deal on them.

Ehm, I got the circuit from daedal's layout, and tried to test it, but (being too lazy to do that) I left out the cap, diode and 4Ohms resistor as they are for safety reasons only (afaik), and tried it with a dvd read-only diode. What happens (6V in)? I don't need to connect pin 3, neither does changing the potentiometer change anything - the diode lights up dimly, nothing compared to 2.4V directly (and poti). Did I do sth. wrong?!?

Still, thanks for the circuit info!

I just wanted to say that the capacitor is NOT something to skip. It is a NECESSITY!

Sorry, but you just fried your diode. You probably got a voltage spike without a capicitor. By any chance does the diode emit it's light as 3 lines?

Nope, it is not fried. It us extremely robust, it seems as it takes a lot of electrical and physical stress but beams on happily. Also a combo red/ir, on a side note.

three lines? What do you mean? No, I have a red blob, and, if collimated, a nice dot.
Do you mean wavelengths/spectral lines?!?

Another question: will that one[/url] work instead of the Aixiz Module? I just seem to have trouble ordering the Aixiz.

Yes, that will work. I use those DX modules with the GB diodes, as far as i know they are identical to the aixiz ones (the top review on dx is mine).

So, let me get this straight. This is the thread where I watch for GB's of the 16X Blu-rays?
Seems everyone has one but me!

Currently there are no 16x blu-rays, altho there are blue rays but they are read only and it would be dificult to get it to pop a baloon....

Confused wishful thinking on my part it seems.

I'd like to know more about laser pulsing. I can't as yet post an URL here, but there's only one link when you Google this one: fast-high-energy-pulser
Does it look like something you guys might build? The high voltage seems counter-intuitive.

BTW How does one modify one's default laser inventory as shown next to the username, i.e. "Class 1 laser"?

Well i dont really know about the laser pulsing but that "class 1 laser" changes with how many posts you have, like im a "class 3r laser" because i have more than 500 posts and you change again at 1000, then after that i think it stays the same until you get 5000 posts.

So, it's a metric for forum endurance?
I'm just a puny class 1; couldn't even blind a bat! :-/
