Yup you can use it and you could use the heat sink too, just like it is. But you would need to get some Arctic Silver Thermal Epoxy to mount the module to the heat sink.

I have something very similar that came from an old video card. I haven't done anything with it yet, but was thinking of using it with my peltier.

I'll have to get some thermal epoxy then.

I have a bigger one with a REALLY strong fan on it.

its 2 times the size. Think I could use it?

I'll find it and get a picture.
The bigger fan with heat sink has a copper center on the heat sink and it worked really good in cooling a pentium 3.

they should all work! as long as it isn't to small for your TEC, it will work, i'd say go with the one that has copper if possible, it transfers heat very well!

Yes, CPU coolers work very well and if you have one laying around doing nothing...use it. They are very good for lab lasers. The diode does not get anywhere near as hot as a CPU does. I posted pics of mine in the TEC thread.

I don't have a TEC though.


well, there is one in my micro fridge, but I'm not taking it apart.

I'll stick with just the fan. once i find it

that's fine! just attach the laser to the heatsink, it will work well. people only use TEC's because it's fun, and they can cool the diode without needing moving parts. the TEC's are only needed really if you are pushing the didoe to the limit!

My other TEC came today. So just out of curiosity, I mounted it to the same type of cooler as Phazonx has in his picture. The heat sink on mine is 1.5 X 1.5 inches. And it appears as thin as his. Anyway I let it run for a few minutes using one nimh battery, and the only place it got warm was the area surrounding the TEC. Now on to my next test... ;D

my micro fridge has a TEC, but it needs 12 volts at 4 amps

so I have a big 4 amp power supply.

technically the TEC will take most anything you give it (obviouslly up to a point...mabye around 25V 4A). it doesnt REQUIRE 12V @ 4A....

i have played with those 12v @ 4 amp ones, actually i'm going to order a few more tonight to play with! these things are really fun to play with, and once i had it set upp just right that as soon as i put water onto it, it froze instantly ;D ;D ;D but yea in your case, the diode should never get hot enough to heat up the heatsink to a high temperature.
