Do any of you have an opinion on this circuit? World Wide Web.edn.com/archives/1998/110598/pdfs/23D12291.pdf.
I'm not allowed to post links.

rog8811,
Thanks for posting the link to that pdf for me :) I agree that the simplicity of the LM317 is hard to beat. I was just hoping to tap into the large pool of gnurd power here to help me get my head around some of these more complicated circuits. I like the idea of the soft start feature, when it's time to step up to more expensive diodes.
Cheers

P.S. I really like your portable projector, I'm thinking about building one to put on my bike as a tail light. Pointed down at the ground of course. This may be a bad idea, but I'll try it and see.

That's a very complex circuit for a beginner. Complex for a modulated beam. Are you planning communications on a light wave? The soft start can be added to most circuits at the cost of an additional ~.7 volt drop.

Hi Hemlock Mike,
I'm not planning any communications on light wave, at this point. I came across the circuit here: W_W_W.edn.com/archives/1998/110598/23di.htm
I've been dissecting DVD burners, and have been wondering how these diodes operate in their intended use. I'm still amazed at the price points of these devices, there's a lot going on in there.
I think that I understand the benefits of the soft start, but what is the purpose of the soft decay?
