Dorcy "slim"

Senkat and I have been toying with the idea of making a laser out of these badboys. Well upon tearing into one I found that they dont' have a circuit that is easilly accessable. Nor does it meet the power requirements to drive the laser at the power we want. So I tore into one anyway and here is the journey.

The driver circuit is from Dealextreme and is putting out (they claim) 350 ma. We shall see.

Ok this circuit is not suited for this project. Unfortunetly it's voltage requirement is 3.6v and I find it funny that they recommend 2 AA or 2AAA for this circuit. I know of no two AA or AAA that come to more that 3.0v. so it's below the voltage requirement and is only at 1.5v. I put 3v in and get 1.5v out. still rated at 350ma. that did work out. I did get a chance to test teh circuit with a cr123 rechargable putting out 4.2v and it then goes up to 3v. at 350ma. I'm kinda stuck at this point now trying to find a good circuit for this project.

Hey Kenom, I don't know how much play there is with the inner diameter of the tube and the diameter of the AAs, but have you thought about using 2 CR2 3V batteries instead of the AAs? They're about 15.5 to 16mm in diameter and 27mm tall, where a AA battery is about 13.5 to 14.5mm in diameter and 50.5mm tall. You may be able to get the CR2s to fit diameter-wise by peeling off the plastic wrap around them and insulate them with thinner tape or a coat of clear finger nail polish (if they need insulated.) That would make the total height 54mm, leaving about 47mm (2*50.5-54) of room above the batteries in which you could probably fit a small version of Daedal's circuit. Of course this is all dependent on if the diameters will work.

CR2s are somewhat expensive to buy locally (a little under $6 each at Wal-Mart or Target), but you can find them for about $2 each online, and they would last a decent amount of time (~750mAh) for their size.

I've actually worked out a way to solve the issue of power being sent to this unit. Essentially what I need to do is creat a dummy battery out of aluminum (should be pretty easy to do) and replace the top battery with the dummy and in the bottom below the dummy goes a 14500. It puts out 3.6v which is just what the circuit calls for. So now I just need my dummy battery.

so it does! Wow. I didn't even realize that. That would certainly make life easier. Now if we can just find where it's sold at. I've tried finding the 3AAA version and havn't been able to find that one either. Maybe an email to dorcy will help us.

Well upon close examination of the thing it looks to me to be wider than the dorcy slim. specifications on the website are for the package not the flashlight so it's really hard to tell but just by pictures I'd say it's about 1/4 inch to 1/2 wider. I donno if I like that. I'll order one and we'll see.

I believe that one is quite new and was in fact released just before you came back, if I recall correctly. It shouldn't be that much wider since it takes the same size battery, I think the picture might be a bit deceiving..

depends how long you want it to last i guess. i hear so much about these fatal spikes, but i havent been able to do my own experimenting. sounds like they would be fairly random though. could take a week before it kills your diode, could take a month. could happen instantly. the driver should ensure that it never happens. otherwise nobody would use them at all and stick to raw power. shouldnt be more than $10 if you already have the required tools.

any chance of anyone selling 2-3 to me. so they put out around 350ma with 3.6v rcr then
if i want to reduce that all i have to do is add a resistor in series right.

so kenom what the word on the 3 AAA one? and can you use the 7135 because wouldnt it cut off once the batt reaches 3v?
